Re: Miners mat
G'day, I was watching some vid's the other night and they were talking about a matting cheap from Bunnings, I don't remember what they called it, but it looked like a 'scotch brite' scour pad.

Re: Miners Mat
+1 on the Marine carpet. I use it, and it does a good job of picking up the fine stuff.

Re: Miners mat
The problem with marine carpet is it is impossible to get ALL the gold out. Use black V-rib mat in your sluice and you will get all your fine gold and it will be easy to clean. Also, if your carpet is 8mm thick you are reducing the height of your riffle by 8mm,thus reducing its efficiency. No more carpet/grass or spaghetti mat. Just the black stuff, and you can see the gold easily on it too.

Re: Miners mat
Over the years we have tried all the types of matting which is suitable for sluicing. The main points that stood out was each type of matting works well in one particular type of sluice but very poorly in another. Due mainly to water flow, riffle configuration and the operational angle of the unit at hand. The marine carpet would be the best all rounder, but it is a real bugger to get all the fine gold out of the carpet weave. Miners moss works well but has a tendency to clog it is not self cleaning. Once your matting clogs it’s good by to any fine gold which may come into your sluice. And that is the reason why we use the open holed matting it is self cleaning and at days end you get all the gold, and not spend days belting the B/G’s out of carpet. Ideally any type of matting used in a sluice you should be able to burn to retrieve any fine gold which may be trapped in it’s fibre.
