Channels on the SD2200d Empty Channels on the SD2200d

Post  Guest Sun Feb 27, 2011 1:55 pm

G'day all,
Just wondering what the channels do in the 22's. I have always used mine in both channels but suspect that by switching to channel one or two would cause the detector to either go more sensitive on smaller gold or deeper on biggies depending on which one you choose. Anyone able to shed some light on this??
Cheers, Chris

G'day Chris,

The channel selector on the sd series is best left in the search position. This way you hear the response from either of the channels depending which one has the highest signal. So if you had it in the most sensitive channel only, the detector would be just as sensitive as when in the search position, but you would miss any targets picked up only by the other channel. With experience when you find a target you can switch between the channels and then get an idea on the target size and or if it is ground noise. Start having a bit of a fiddle and check the response on both the channels individually before you dig up a target.

Cheers Mick

G'day Chris. Welcome to the Forum

Mick just about summed it all up.The 2200 was really not designed for working hot ground with monos. If your running the detector in channel 1 only, just to keep ground noise to a minimum,on a mono, you'll be losing about 30% in depth on targets.Channel 2 only,is designed for smaller to medium sized nuggets at shallower depth. If the ground gets to noisy with a mono, you'll be much better off using DDs on hot ground and the best of all worlds is achieved by running the detector in both channels. Neither channel on its own will give you the greatest possible depth. The greatest depth,on a variety of targets, can only be achieved by having the detector set in both channels and switched to deep.Even this has a price by missing out on some of the tinier gold.

Cheers kon61.

The SD2200 does not lend itself well to being operated in one channel only like the SD 2100 could, however it was a much quieter detector with Monoloop coils in noisy ground because the two channels were sorted better and the inclusion of auto Ground balance. The audio on the SD2200 was its biggest downfall, with the start up noise ridiculously loud and the overall volume too quiet, the best add on piece of equipment for the 2200 would have to be a booster speaker combo, put it in bypass when you turn it on then crank it up when things have settled, put the detector in tracking and then go for it. Believe it or not an SD2200 will run quieter on hot ground than a GP series machine will, but will have less overall depth than a GP and less sensitivity to the smaller gold thanks to DVT. Using a high set voltage regulated battery will cause a lot more ground noise hence the suggestion they're not good with Monoloop coils.

I run mine with a 14" coiltek mono and find it a very capable combination for depth and its ability to find smaller gold. I also used to run the 21 with the same combo but in hot ground it was a bit much for it. Thanks again for the responses fellas, much appreciated.
