I know this is an old thread, but some one might find the advice on here useful.
One consideration I have not read on here is the availability of parts and familierality of mechanics in certain areas to certain makes of vehicles.
In the top end, the bigger manufacturers are easily the best cars to own, Toyota's and Nissans.
Most mechanics have worked on Cruisers, Prado,s, Hilux,s, patrols and navara,s, so many times they could do it blindfolded and if they don't have parts in stock, they know where they can source them quickly.
If you have an exotic 4x4 in a remote area, have a big limit on your credit card, because you are going to require your car to be transported else where, or book accommodation for an unknown length of time....

This topic hasn’t been posted on for a while. My answer is buy your 4x4 of choice new or second hand but drive it for a while get a good mechanic to go over it and drive it to alert you to potential problems . Fix these problems ,if your brakes have 5000 is left on them and the tyres 3000 get them replaced your not got trouble YET but needs urgent attention . Today you can buy a good 4x4 but can easily gobble up $15,000 and really you can’t see where the money went . I have a Toyota and whilst travelling from Queensland to Western Australia around Burke I started to overheat. It was the radiator cap collapsed simple but not a simple fix … no radiator caps in Bourke none in servos 1 mechanic in town he had none but went back and found me one … gust a tad wouldn’t fit … there was a courier from Repco delivering oil and ordered stuff , I asked them if they had a radiator cap for my car and about 30% of recent cars . No you have to order one back in a week . This is Burke NSW . I went to an agg store and waited eventually the woman said how could she help me ? I said have you any radiator caps . She said yes and brought out 4 in a dusty wooden box and 1 was off a Holden fj another off a Ford son tractor and one off god knows what and yep the one I wanted . After 6 hours of piss farting around I was on my way . Lol first at 60 check water 80 check water 100 check water and kept going to broken hill all good if anything better than when I purchased the Prado . So there you go know your vehicle take spare hoses radiator cap fan belts . Oil in case you get a leak etc . You hear a noise stop and check you feel a vibration stop and check smell burning stop and look and if your capable stop and ask a stranded broken down motorists if you can help. Cheers Chris
