hi mad, the best coils are a N/F 14" to and 18" and a 8" commander coil for a gpx 4000. with setting someone setting might not work as well on anther detector as they could be less secitive or some could be more, there could be that chance that 2 could be the same and the setting could works... but saying that it's good to get a start so you can play around with the settings. i'll post my settings that i have running now soon for you
cheers

G'day Steve and Lea.In my opinion you can't go past the 8" round Commander mono which is light, very maneuverable and good depth and sensitivity. It is a great coil for the 4000.I can remember detecting a 1" steel washer from around 4' down one time..Having said that ,the 10" DD oliptical Commander is also a very good coil and even better for getting into really scrubby, rocky terrain. If in shallow ground you can use it in mono mode to great effect.I've found however it doesn't have quite the same depth capablities as the 8".Another great little coil is the 6" Coiltek mono. Its a great little coil with fantastic sensitivity and very maneuverable in heavy scrub.I once detected a one gram piece from over a foot down.See my Youtube....

Stoppsy, the deepest I've dug a nugget with the 8" was about 12 to 14 inches.... not saying it wont go deeper as I know it will on the right size target, just that is the deepest I've dug one with it.
If I'm hunting deeper ground, bigger nuggets or the scrub lets me I use a bigger coil. The 8" I mainly use for shallow, tight ground and known piddley bit spots.

I'm just pretty sure mine wont go 4' on a 1" target

Yeah I agree with you there Tuna, 4' is a mighty big distance with an 8" coil. IMO if you cannot air test the target at that distance then it is difficult to see how it can be detected in the ground at that distance, as you have to compete with ground miniralization for a start, which will affect depth.

Actually I have regularly found nuggets at greater depths "in ground" than they could be detected "in air", I put this down to Halo effect, the discussion of which always brings on enthusiastic debate.affraid Not sure about the 4' dig with an 8" coil coil though, that sounds like a pretty hard ask unless the target was huge.

Based on that, a 25" NF should be able to pick up a 1" washer-sans bus-at about 12'. Better go buy a backhoe.

My Favourite coil for tight spots amongst rocks, tussocks etc is the Coiltek 10"x5" eliptical mono (Joey). Pings unbelievibly tiny stuff and will slip into very tight spots Wink . I have an 8" Minelab mono but it is very noisy so usually stick to the Coiltek even though the Minelab may go deeper. But then I once saw a 5oz bit found with the Joey at nearly 2' on a 3000.

Cheers, Jim cheers
