SR5 or SURF - advice wanted

Howdy,

i am looking to get me a car. A big 4wd hopefully. I am a big guy.

Would like a cheaper disel car, as it will be used exclusively to bash around the diggs.
I am not even planning to take it back to Melbourne, just gonna keep it in the country.
Maybe i will camp out of it now and again.

So far i like Landcruisers, Patrols, and Hiluxes.

And out of thouse SR5 /Surf hilux looks to have the best size/price ratio

Anyone has one of them, and how reliable are they? I been told that they are nothing like the real hilux, and will disapoint.

Also, is there a difference between a 4x4 and 4wd? Like Shultz, i know nothing!

There was a major problem with the Surf's motor if memory serves. Better to get a Hilux

yep hilux. but you can pick up a gu patrol for half the price and go just the same places in just as much comfort! Thats what i got and love me gu!

dont get a 2.4 turbo diesel they have a habit of cracing heads

I would give the hilux a miss.... the patrol or cruiser is the go.

A landcruiser troopcarrier might be go if you want to camp out of it- i think they got more headroom in the back. I think there are some camper ones around??, whether they be original campers or some type of aftermarket setup, I dunno there.

I know this is an old thread though in defence of the hilux surf I have owned and currently own a Hilux Surf both engine sizes 2.4 and now the 3ltr and for 8 years never had a problem, yes there are some people who have overheating/head problems though in my opinion it has to be a lack of maintanance. I have towed cars on a tandem trailer (with the 2.4) for over 200k's with no issue, I used to tow a 17' fishing boat from melb to phillip island during summer with no issues and have also done long trips through the high country through some insane terrain and again no problems.... gets me home everytime.

Yes they are an import though not a problem to insure and parts are an easy source as the australian delivered rv6 and 4runners have the same body panels and the earlier prado and hiluxs have interchangable engine and drivetrain parts.

when it comes to camping just fold down the back seats and you have over 6' of sleeping length.

overall they are tuff, reliable, capable, fuel efficient and if you opt for the 3ltr powerful rigs and just to stir the pot a bit can get through tight spots where the patrol and cruisers have trouble, dont you love those trees that are a bit to close together...
