Hey fellow nuggeteers
just a little info that you may find helpful, if you have any old puter hard drives laying around or know anyone in the puter industry or friends etc... in the hard drive case is 2 rare earth magnets, undo 6 screws and prise apart you will see 2 cresent (actually 1) but they are over each other so 2 bits of metal held on by 2 screws, undo these 2 screws and lever apart as they quite strong .... wallah ... 2 magnets ready to glue or screw onto the pick etc ..... be careful as they will pinch your skin if caught in between them affraid ....... have fun Very Happy Very Happy

this not my own doing it was snaffled from the Canadian Gold forum What a Face

Ta Byron. Actually there were no screws holding the cover on the magnets in my one, just magnetism! Popped out the first magnet, but still trying to get the 2nd one out. I think it is glued. I actually chipped a bit off it trying to pry it out. Worth the while though, they are very strong. cheers Managed to add a photo. I find this always helps. cheers

Rare earth magnets are great, but,
They absolutely destroy mechanical and digital watches if they stay close enough, long enough, and
Be careful, if you put two of them, too close together, if they are attracted to each other they will come together very fast and if they are very strong ones they will shatter, and the pieces can be vey sharp.Be careful. santa

not disputing the above video, but no one is going to use a 140kg+ rated rare earth magnet whilst detecting.

True Goldbait. When I was removing the last magnet shown in the photo above, a third of it broke off. That is the bit I will embed in the end of my pick handle as it is plenty powerful enough on it's own. I really want to be able to lift my pick off the ground if I lie it down.

true, but the problem with rare earth magnets is their effective range is so close to the magnet.

i was thinking about building a platform to drag behind me to literally suck up all the junk from the ground, but it wouldn't work. most of the junk is at about 6 inches deep. the magnets are only good at about 1"... even the big ones.

This would be ideal for prospecting. I think this store may also have the magnetic rakes which I've seen before also.

I actually knocked the magnets of with a hammer and cold chisel, takes off some annealing or chrome and liquid steeled em on to the pick head, works a treat even if sprayed the same as the head

I cut a slight countersink hole in the end of pick handle then a little fiberglass over it which leaves a nice smoothed end on the pick handle
This makes a good probe to try and find that thing in the loose soil, sending the detector off.
Then it is so easy to wipe all the magnetic rubbish off the end of the handle.

I put one in the end of my pick handle a few years back, problem was the fight you had to go through getting it passed the metal pick ring holder when it was time to holster it. Rolling Eyes

Hi StLeon
It saves time finding those tiny pieces of ferrous trash, just wave the magnet thru the dirt.Ive mounted mine in the end of the pick handle with some flat aluminium over the top and a couple of recessed screws.

Howdie all , just thought I would pass along some info on another use for rare earth magnets. Thus; sons mate bought an old house to renovate. Problem was, the house yard was littered with lots of old nails, screws, wire etc. How to collect all or most of this? Easy, this bloke attached a rare earth magnet, (glued may be?) to a piece of stout cord, a metre or so long. Tied the other end to his dogs collar! Dog wanders around house yard all day dragging magnet. Each day this bloke gets home from work and pulls all the accumulated junk off magnet!!!
Worked quite well! Live and learn!
