Noisy Minelab 4500 coil Connector plug socket

Hi from Young TUT
Ive just bought a Minelab 4500 In July this year and Im getting alot of Noise and interference from my Coil connector socket on the control box.As soon as I start swinging my coil It starts and if I just touch the coil lead the detector goes off Its head.Ive tried two other coils on just Incase it was the coil fitting but they all do the same Ive got all my settings on factory presets mode Im just wondering If anybody else has had the same problem

Hi mate and welcome to the forum.

Some noise in that area is common if you touch the lead unfortunately.
Make sure you have the knurlled nut done up finger tight and that the lead is not stretched too tightly pulling on the lead. You want the lead to go straight into the socket, not down and in so there is any strain on the last couple of inches. Also dont forget to use the supplied velcro straps to secure the lead so it's not flapping about or getting caught.

There are some simple little retainers on the market that aid this but usually they are not needed at all.

Please check the locknut is tight as mine came loose shortly after purchase.There is shielding behind the panel so the connector needs to be tight.

This is a feature-fault? of just about all the Ml's and I've had them all and found that the best way to prevent this noise problem is to fix the coil cable with a cable tie, not the velcroe, in front of the handle base so that the coil cable has a straight run to the control box conector. Pain in the bum (No more than Doug) when you have to change coils but it certainly stops your declared problem. Hope this helps.

As already mentioned this is an inherent problem with plug to box but can be simply overcome.
Fit the coil to the stick and run the lead straight up to the first joint securing with at least 3 velcros. Leave a small loop at bottom to allow the coil to swivel.
If you swing right handed, coil the lead so the loop passes the handle on the RH side viewed from top. This is to prevent lead loop flexing if it hits your hip while swinging.
Connect plug and finger tighten, now wriggle the plug and you will find you can finger tighten it slightly more. You may need to do this several times.
Now secure the lead with more velcros.

Give this a try and see how you go.

Further to Peter's post, if you don't have any spare velcros you can use the tape that you wrap around the edge of your coil. Most detector dealers sell it.

Same thing happened to my 4500. On assembly, I couldn't stop the interference coming from the loose connector. So I sent it back to Minelab and they fixed it. No more problems.

Hi,
The gold plating on your plug is very thin. The more you change coils the more you wear this plating exposing the copper underneath. It doesnt take long for the copper to corrode making the plug totally useless. You can try and clean the plug holes with contact cleaner and small pipe cleaners but it is best to replace them with new ones. It's also a good idea to replace the plugs on the control box depending on how much use its had.

i had the same problem with the 4000 there was flexi pcb that was damaged and a header as well. i'm not to sure what these parts are but i'm going to look into it. i only sent the detector off to get the switch done and got them just to check everything to make sure it was right, they didn't charge nothing for fixing any off the problems wich was even better. the coil had something wrong with it and M/L just gave me a new one
