metal detectors for the deaf

Hello all, i know what your thinking is this is a joke? No, just wondering if anyboby has ever heard of a metal detector designed for the deaf !
My sister and her husband are both deaf and i know they would love to get out bush and have a go.Perhaps instead of an external speaker some sort of vibration impliment on the body like on a mobile phone for only the strong signals maybe? Any ideas? MARTY

I think your best option would be a good VLF detector something like the new Fisher Gold Bug Pro, as they have a target ID,LCD screen, you may be able to get somone in electronic to make up an LED type light bar as an indicator on the minelabs instead of the headphones, good luck, there must be something that can be done.

I think metal detectors for the deaf is very possible, reminds me when I was a younger lad, i wanted to rig up disco lights to my radio, all I did was get a small 1.5 volt light bulb conected to the speaker terminals and the light would flash in time with the music, so this idea could and would work on a metal detector maybe with led lights, i think lights would work better than vibrations.

Something that vibrates when the signal peaks would be good, and maybe have it in conjunction with a target id screen as well, the vibration unit that you get in a mobile phone imbedded in a wrist band or something would be the go, on the arm that you are carrying the detector with.

They are hard to miss, one time while being driven about by my nephew I put my phone down between my legs and forgot about it until someone called me, just about jumped clean out of the seat, thought my luck had changed , if that was attached to your wrist I think it might work.

Not a problem, this is pretty much the path I would follow, it will give you the idea anyway. I would run this past JP and discuss this for using with his booster as it takes 2aaa batteries instead of using the external speaker, use lights, run from the jack to the lights.

You need what is called a bone phone I have one on one of my under water detectors, it clicks and vibrates check out some of the US sites for more info.

I read or heard somewhere recently where a detectorist who suffered a bad hearing impairment had a
audiologist/technician tailor-make a unit that was very successful.......so it's another avenue for you to research.

I have used a bone-phone and although I am only hard of hearing I was
amazed at the signal's I could 'feel'...

Also think the idea of having a device that vibrates like a cell phone but
perhaps with a wider range of vibration is a great idea.

thinking about it i think probably a vibration device and a series of progressive lights combined would be the go. if you had just lights the operator would have to watch the lights instead of where they were swinging the coil.certainly the lights could be mounted on the shaft , but when you are on your knees looking for the target,i think the vibration device would be the go.

i am not an electronic wizz by any stretch of the imagination, but i would think a good place to start would be somewhere like dick smith of jaycar. with electronics getting better and smaller all the time , i would think there would be something out there that would convert sound to pulses or lights .good luck with this

Thanks Lee,do you know how well the Gold Bug handles general goldfield mineralisation?I had an explorer which was a great detector in quiet ground but had very little sensitivity on medioka ground. Thanks mate MARTY

i think garrett would be a good place to try as their pro pointer already has vibration.

Hey guys only new to this but i had met a guy when I went to NUGGETS FROM DOWN UNDER to pick up my x-terra 705 who was deaf and mute. I assume he has a good detector and finds good gold but he uses the under chin ear phones which he has modified so he can push them as far as possible and uses the vibration as signal. If you give Kim a call at nuggets she may be able to help cheers Tim

Hello everyone, suppose i should tell what happened in the end with trying to organise a detector for the deaf ! I ended up buying a unit from Kellyco detectors in the US called a Vibra Phone. It plugs in where the headphones plug in and clips onto the shaft under your arm and vibrates on a signal. Minelab Technitions said they would be happy to test it on a 4500 to tell me how it would go. It took about three months for the vibra phone to turn up after phonecalls and emails and i honestly nearly gave up on it (i won't be going there again).While waiting for it, swaping emails with my brother inlaw he explained that he would try it but probably never use it and didn't think any of his friends would either as they just wern't interested in detecting just 4wding and camping.So i decided to cut my costs and bail on the idea with a vibraphone in the cupboard for some sort of use in the future maybe.Anyway thanks very much for everyones help. Just test it on a vlf on all metal mode. I think if it works there
Should work on anything else.

It can take a lot of time to get something where you ordered yours from.

Really? And how much would it cost from Minelab?

This is very easy to apply to Silent search machines that prvide an strong output for all targets large or small deep or shallow.
Just bung an vibibrator inside the handgrip and combine with a visual display or a series of different coloured lights like the BDHI.

Hi Kate, i came up with that too in my research so thats why i was going to send it to Minelab to check it on a 4500.They said there would be no charge.
