Victoria loses a FIFTH of crown land - will this affect anyone here?
The deal was the FIRST signed under Victoria's Traditional Owner Settlement Act 2010 and is said to take in almost a fifth of Victoria's Crown Land which was handed over to the Gunaikurnal Aboriginal People in a landmark agreement.

No doubt this is the beginning of a trend.

This could create difficulties for those of us in East Gippsland.

This sounds scary for us detectors!
It really needs some clarification on what restrictions etc. will now apply in these 'granted' areas.
Are other areas earmarked for similar ownership handover e.g. State Forests in the Golden Triangle?
Does anyone know what PMAV's position is on this?

I have no intention of letting it affect my detecting here in Gippsland.
However some smart alec once wrote
The meek shall inherit the earth, but not the mineral rights.
also however
I'd change the world for the better, if only I could get hold of the source code.

Yes I can see it now , taxpayers money being spent setting up communities and so called eco businesses with our ind friends sitting on their butts receiving handouts whilst trashing the newly acquired lands.
No access to anyone else, unless via permit and payment, all this is 90% about money and only 10% about the land.
I know this shouldn't be said and I hope I'm wrong but after 12 years working for the SA Government in the lands I know the true story well enough.
Don't get me wrong I'm not a raciest but are a realist, been there seen that.

Hey fellas,
Remember the forum rules.
While we do not necessarily agree with what is going on here, we must respect peoples rights and not slander them. This post could quite easily get out of hand if emotions begin to come through.
Take it up with your local polly, PMAV.

Reply from the PMAV.
Hi Bill,
Your enquiry has been forwarded to me for response.
We posted the following to a forum yesterday, you may find some comfort in its contents.
Rita
The PMAV has been working on this issue for a while. We have been verbally assured by a Ministerial advisor that the legislation will not affect those operating under a Miners Right. To be 100% sure on this, we have written directly to the Resources Minister asking for a written response from him. The new East Gippsland branch president, Brian Bateson, helped write the letter asking for a minor legislative change which will ensure our rights into the future.
Given the legislation has now become law, we have given the Minister’s office a hurry-up and will post the response once received.
We have also asked major political parties for their response to the legislative amendment that Brian proposed (this is one of ten questions put on a variety of relevant issues) – PMAV members will be given written advice of the responses prior to the State Election in November.
Unfortunately this legislation does impact on mining and, given it took the PMAV 10 years to finalise the Indigenous Land Use Agreement with the Dja Dja Wurrung people regarding smaller scale mines in Central Victoria, our outlook for smaller-scale mining operations in Gippsland is dismal!
Rita Bentley, President. Prospectors and Miners Association of Victoria.
