It's easy to slip into the "zone" when detecting and you miss seeing the small things that make up the bush that your walking around in. BUT, I am always on the lookout for those bloody Bull Ant nests, the warmer weather seems to bring out their bad attitude.

I thought they jail you for Orchid bashing in Victoria.
Nice to see someone else taking pictures of flowers. My wife always beats me to it but I think the wildlife and flora is worthy of the time it takes to snap a shot. Some of the smallest plants and critters can be the most beautiful. Good job!

Re: 3 reasons I like to go bush
Gday
Thats one of the attractions of the bush for me too, I like to see the plants that appear at different times of the year, sometimes you can detect through an area and not really notice anything and then close to spring time the same area can look quite different and smell quite different with many of the shrubs also being aromatic as well.
One time in Karratha we set up camp just before dark and I noticed some low scraggy shrubs that had white largish buds on them, one was quite close to our fire place so it was the first that we noticed opening after dark, when they opened up they had large white waxy looking flowers on them, I was amazed to see that they opened after dark, I have some photos of them somewhere, someone from up that way might be able to give us some more info on them maybe.
Other areas such as Paynes Find and out towards Yalgoo come alive with flowering shrubs and wildflowers, its quite surreal detecting through a carpet of flowers, and its hard to believe its the same place when you have been there during the winter and its so barren looking.
cheers

Re: 3 reasons I like to go bush
I love the bush and always have my camera with me. I also took some photos of the wild flowers the other day and the biggest echidna ive ever seen sleeping inside a hollow tree. Unfortunately i dont have photo bucket account anymore and been a bit lazy to set one up or learn how to post pics on here (bad bad me). But your right, its amazing what can be found off the beaten track when you take the time to look

3 reasons I like to go bush
fishberley Great pics mate! That first orchid pic is a ripper, Caladenia stricta, nearly as rare as the gold in the last pic. You are fortunate to have seen this in the wild these days, they are becoming very scarce. Check "Field Guide to The Orchids of NSW and Victoria" pp.138 item 338 for a detailed description.

Hi, its a Canon Powershot SX100IS (8 megapixels and 10 optical zoom).
Got it cause I had the earlier model and was happy with it. It is a larger style digital camera which I like cause I hate those pissy little girly cameras. It take good macro pictures (just what I need for all the small gold I find ).

Haha, I just bought one of those pissy little girly camera's (10 mp) 'cause the expensive camera is too bulky to carry out in the elements and I'd rather damage the girly camera rather than the big manly one.
It will be interesting to see the comparison of the two when it turns up.
Cheers

Re: 3 reasons I like to go bush
Talking about echidna's i had a massive full albino one march right up to me i thought it was going to walk between my legs, ive got footage of it on my phone camera so i have to get it off there and put it on youtube some how, on the internet i can only find three images or so of an albino echidna.

Boys;under these conditions, you're better off with a canoe, paddle in one hand, pan in the other.
You'll also increase your chances of of obtaining more gold with each Eskimo roll.
