Show your Past finds
Hi everyone
Thought with all the doom & gloom that’s going on.
I would start this.
Show us some of your past finds. It doesn’t have to be gold
Can be virtually anything that’s been found while out with your detector or sluice, or pan.
Snake’s found in Victoria, many many many... many moons ago.
Gold was found in W.A a few years ago

Re: Show your Past finds
Beautiful going there Mike/Jen. I can only hope that things come back to normal more sooner than latter, so that you can all go back to doing what you loved best.
Joe, tell me you saved a couple of those prime porker rear hind legs, for smoked prosciutto?
Cheers Kon.

Re: Show your Past finds
When I first begun detecting back in the 80's, visited the old mining town of Nannine, WA, that at one stage had 5000 residents.
The first Murchison Inn was built here 24/09/1891.
All that remained when I visited was the Government Well that had excellent drinking water, a few mud bricks from the original Post Office and remains of a railway siding.
After arriving back home I went to the Mines Department and pulled out some history and found the location of the cemetery and the gazetted rubbish site.
Visited Nannine again in 1987, located the cemetery and was quite shocked to see that most of the gravesites were young men and women and children. The town had been ravaged by typhoid and other diseases rife in that era.
Went on to locate the rubbish site and actually found the gazetted Government peg with the number still readable.
I dug amongst the hundreds of overgrown mounds but unfortunately some one had got to most of the interesting finds like torpedo bottles marked with Nannine Cordial Company. I found many but that had the neck broken off. I later found out they were smashed to retrieve the glass marble out of the neck and also bottle collectors broke them to up the value of the intact ones.
Any way all was not lost, I found many fob watches, unfortunately none of them engraved, knives, forks and spoons.
However, was very excited when I recovered a small moulded life like kangaroo, originally it had been coated with copper.
Kept it for many years until the early 2000's we began having meets every year and one of the persons met was Frank Wallace (The digger). Frank was into working with gold and after I mentioned the kangaroo I had found all those years earlier he told me if I was interested he could coat it with gold. Jumped at the offer, the before and after photos are attached. Frank also engraved a small plaque which I then mounted on a slab of mulga.
This memento takes pride and place in our home.
Nannine Inn/Hotel
Nannie Railway Station
Unusual bottle, unfortunately with out markings. (Probably snake oil)

Re: Show your Past finds
Some really great memories and photo's there fellas.
You have caused me to realize that During my time in the gold fields I never ever had a camera or even thought about one and so no pics of yesteryear. Well not until my coin detecting days and those pics are a bit boring.

I am the same, never took a lot of pictures of the gold we found in the early days.
Reason... never had a camera, well film for the camera.
Not like today with the smart phones. Just go click click.
Where’s the pic you put up??
It was a great pic of father and daughter going detecting together.

Re: Show your Past finds
all gold is great and easy on the eye.
my fav gold is the more brassy slightly ironstone effected color of gold and the very strange formation like cystaline and jagged gold.
Fav texture very prickly and rough meaning close to the sourse.

Re: Show your Past finds
Hi Jen, Yes Robert Craig was buried by his brother but their are conflicting stories on what caused his death. Snake bite, diphtheria, tuberculosis & Typhoid.
His grave is or was on your lease?

Re: Show your Past finds
My old BEX bottle from 1966 first panned gold on my own.
My best day find back about 1982 I got the gold specimens shown above the display (not the 4 oz solid nugget) containers nearly 27 oz
First Token and USA Dollar.
16+ oz All found in the 1980s at different Victorian locations
400 small bit found 2007 WA with the gm+ bits in another pile somewhere.

G’day Peter,
His grave is not Quite on our lease, as our lease is over the other side of the creek when you drive past his grave away from the well that is. Brian has changed the track last year it cuts across before you get to the well and he has put in a cattle yard near the well and a new concrete trough for the cattle. I had to fix the hose to the small plastic trough a couple of times last year. The young steers had managed to disconnect the hose from the trough and there was water all over the paddock.
Cheers.
Mike.
