Re: Hand held GPS
micro SD card fit's under the battery. You can down load Shonky maps from the net, but have not done it for year and years. Not sure how I did mine now.

Re: Hand held GPS
Shonky Maps are not what they seem to be, very accurate for our WA goldfields.
Fitted the micro to our Rino's.

Hi Joe82, just recapping on that, any one with a Garmin maybe familiar with Garmin Mapsource or Base Camp, Base camp being the later. I was more familiar with mapsource program but had both.
If you have one of these programs, you can or could down load Shonky Maps and would load into either one of these programs, from there you can load into your garmin device or the micro SD card fitted to the device.
Hope this helps, many years since I played with it. I haven't either program on my new computer at the moment, if you can't get Shonky maps any more I think I have it on CD if I can help.
Cheers Peter
PS, there are a lot better topo maps about now but at the time Shonky Maps were free, and surprising what tracks they had. But they do not up date and years old now. But still works for me wandering around in the bush.

Re: Hand held GPS
Joe, Have you changed the model too; Colorado?
You have to put in both type & model.

Hi All,
Peter, backtracking a little, the Southern Cross has an orbit of it's own as your diagram shows , I always thought the two bright stars point to the leading edge of the SC and that it would be in the same place all the time but like your diagram shows it actually has an orbit of it's own...that's the reason she is so hard to locate sometimes
Cheers Ron

I haven't tried this for a long time, etrex tracks onto Google earth. I have a new computer also. Looks like a wet weekend nothing else to do I'll give it a go Joe and let you know if it works (used to be able to)
But then I think I used to import out of Garmin Mapsource and or Base Camp, haven't got either program at the moment so will be starting from scratch like have with a new computer.
I haven't bothered with it for a long time, but it is handy to look back on.
Cheers

Yes Ron,
If you keep an eye on the Southern Cross, this method involves using the two bright Pointer stars Alpha Centauri and Beta Centauri that lie near the Southern Cross, positions change as the night passes. If nature calls in the small hours of darkness the Southern Cross can be upside down, however using my diagram you will still be able to locate South.
Re: Hand held GPS
Joe,
So long since I set up the system, will have to do a bit of head scratching.
Will have a play over next few days and try and clear it up.

Hi Joe,
Have a look here:

This may help as I use this method on my Garmin without any problems.

Re: Hand held GPS
cheers topcat, will have a crack, I'm guessing that the google pro I'm using may be a bit advanced for garmin and I may have to go back to standard google earth as that was what I was running on my old laptop and this new thing has google earth pro??? should this matter I can get the waypoints in but no tracks to go with it

Haha, I hope wassa got his answer to Doug.
Joe I have google earth pro as well and Garmin Etrex seems to have trouble with it!? although I did get a waypoint to load (that I must revisit at Western Creek) but not a track!?
So what I do is use Garmin Basecamp program, when you have Basecamp every thing in your Garmin will load straight into Basecamp, mark a track in base camp that you wish to view in Google Earth, then go to view at the top of your screen scroll down to view in Google Earth, Google Earth will open and the track you have marked will open in Google Earth.
Hope this helps.
Peter

Re: Hand held GPS
I bought my self one of these a "Bushnell, Back Track". It is a very simple unit to use. And trust me I need something simple. It has only 3 way points. but if you only want to mark you Car or Home and 2 other areas, like a find. Then this is for you. This unit has got me back to my car a many a time with no problems. I think Coiltek sells them. I got my from E-bay. There between $145.00 to $127.00 on E-bay
