Charging minelab lithium ion battery
Hi, will a jump starter pack be sufficient to charge a minelab battery? If so will a sca 900amp one do the job? How long will it take?

Re: Charging minelab lithium ion battery
BKS,
The main factor is, what stage of discharge is the battery? There is a range of ML batteries 1000 to 15000mah.
Just plug the 12V charger in and leave it for and hour or three. A good habit to get into is to put your detector battery on charge when you sit down for lunch.
Your 900amp charging battery will certainly be more than enough.
BTW You probably paid $150+ for the SCA, you can buy the battery for it for around $50.00 so $100 for the pretty case and a couple of plugs? Wish I had the patent for these gimmicks?

Thanks nightjar. The minelab battery I have is 7.4v with a 9.2A/H capacity. Thats all the info in the handbook on the battery. I guess the battery will have been used for maybe 8 hours during the day. Will I need to recharge the jump pack if I'm out in the field for 3-4 days. How many charges will I get from the pack? The sca pack is 17 A/H capacity. Does that equate to 2 X 7.4 A/H = 14.8 so only two charges before I have to recharge the starter pack. Thanks.

Re: Charging minelab lithium ion battery
G'day BigKS
Your calcs are on the money you would get a couple of charges out of the jump pack for the ML battery. if you take the 12v charging lead for the ML battery and start your vehicle to make sure you don't drain its battery you could top up the ML battery like that and get a bit longer time.
A small solar setup would be handy to keep the Jump Pack charged up then you would have no worries about keeping the ML battery charged up.
cheers dave

Thanks Davsgold. Would a 20w solar panel from supercheap do the job? Do you recommend having a second mlb to rotate?

I think the 20w panel would keep you out of trouble, I would leave it connected to the jump pack as much as possible. A second ML battery is also a good idea but not essential unless you want it for a backup in case of a failure. If your only going out for a few days at a time I reckon the small solar setup would do the job.
Have fun out there and enjoy.
cheers dave
