Re: 5c Air test
I think 15" to 18" was the depth mentioned.
Not sure if you wave the Z over the coin or do a test
and have the coil on the ground reading it, and waving the coin above.
OR, do any of the above some where a long way from any hot ground.

Re: 5c Air test
I did the test waving over the coin.

with the coil reading hot ground?peterinaust wrote:I did the test waving over the coin.
or with the coil on normal ground?
or with the coil suspended ie, on a table?
Maybe some one reading this has the instructions from M/L.

Re: 5c Air test
On normal ground. High yield/normal/sensitivity 9/thresh hold 27. I did not measure the height, but was impressed with what height it was.
At the time I carried out this test I did not know minelab were doing this as an actual test! I just did it just getting the feel of the zed. And I'm sure I have a good one.
Cheers Peter.

Re: 5c Air test
David made a reply somewhere but I cant find it , wanna put it up again Dave ?
Found it

You should get about 16" to 18" air test on a 5 cent coin in "High Yield" and "Difficult" and sensitivity between 9 to 12 and audio smoothing "OFF" this is what I get anyway and this is about what is achieved by others when there machines are functioning correctly.
cheers dave

Re: 5c Air test
I take it you place the coin on the ground and wave the coil over it?
(never have done an air test before)

Re: 5c Air test
These are my results, I expect going by my 7s performance that it is an "Average" unit as it's only slightly better (10%) than a 4500 in most situations.
Minelab need to work on the audio, it's abysmal for headphone users, Roaring Forties and roaring creeks dictate their use.
In my house in the city, detector sitting on a chair, coil well away from metal.
High Yield, Normal, not ground balanced but in Auto, Sensitivity = 1, Smoothing = off
Most other settings close to default
Waving 5c above coil = weak but constantly repeatable 18"
In the country, detector sitting on ground, coil flat out (fairly quiet clay)
High Yield, Normal, ground balanced in Auto, Sensitivity = 12 Smoothing = off
Most other settings close to default
waving 5c above coil = weak but constantly repeatable 24"
Would be much greater if the audio had more dynamic range i.e. compression on strong signals (available with Volume Limit but it doesn't integrate well with volume and threshold) and expansion on weak.
The Zed doesn't have the audio processing flexibility of the GPX in this regard the settings are quite coarse when you try to fine tune for optimum.
The point is reached where one click up blows the ears, and one click down makes it hard to hear weak signals.
Cheers

Re: 5c Air test
So I called ML yesty and this is what I was told
Place the coil on something like a plastic table and away from electrical interference
switch on and reset to factory default , test should be carried out in HY / N
now wave the 5c coin over the coil this will give you the bench mark , you should be able to break the TH at 45cm
When I did the test on the ground I didnt get anywhere near that but when preformed as per ML, the Z had no worries at all hearing the coin

Re: 5c Air test
We know Marty what an extremely fussy old bag the Zed is when it comes to ground balance.
Obviously the ground under your coil, or the state the machines GB was in, was giving the reduced range, over the coil in air test.
Cheers

thanks martin r that explains a lot, and should give everybody a chance to compare their machine.Martin R wrote:So I called ML yesty and this is what I was told

just thought, humans being humans, we should mention how the coin is held - vertical or horizontal... kev

Or is the Z vertical or horizontal on the 'plastic table'

Geeeeeesssssssssssssssssss . Horizontal for both "Z" and the Coin

Thanks Marty, never done an air test before.
I'm sure others who search the net will be appreciative of the post.

Re: 5c Air test
Couldn't find a quiet spot so just tested at a spot near harvest Home.
HY/N and coming from afar,
slight sound at about 24"
dig me sound at about 18 - 20".
Happy with that.

If Mrs Redfin was operating yes, me maybe, I'd take a few inches off and listen again.
