Re: 7000 battery charger
G'day Mick,
I have only been charging mine on the 240volt charger and haven't had any probs yet. Will have to look into it next time I charge mine.
Cheers.
Mike.

Been charging of the 12v system no probs also,
Maybe you 12v battery is on its way out, drop in voltage by the fridge may be the cause, check the battery volts out.
Cheers Mick

Re: 7000 battery charger
Thank for the replys
I also notice that the charger is getting very hot I mean cant touch it bullsh1t hot
on bottom of charger it says 11 to 30 volts
my batterys are at 12.6 with engine off 13.5 running
My rig is only 2 years old so battrys should be ok
When I switch of engine it charges for about 5 mins then red light starts flashing
think I will contact minelab when I get back

Re: 7000 battery charger
I think your right ML should fix you up with another, Just wondering you didn't have it plugged in charging off crank battery while cranking over engine?

Re: 7000 battery charger
I found when charging my 3030 out bush I had to go through the inverter.
I think your batteries have to be in tip top condition to use the 12v socket.
Found it interesting they supplied the direct connection leads to the battery.
Might be cause of this.

hey thanks Alan
never thought of that I tried it this morning and it charges ok and doesn't get hot
not sure what's happening here but might be something to do with the electronics on the switched 12v points in my troopy
im sure some electronics guru would know

Heat
Found problem to be heat e.g. 40* plus days effecting both the charger and battery. A mate and I were detecting in North QLD on some very hot days, we were using two units and had the same problem with both.
I was using a inverter, so was charging from 240v - 12v as I left my 12v lead home. Mate was using 12v lead through 12v socket.
You would come back from detecting at lunch and put battery on charge, Red light would be on charger.
Put battery in car fridge to cool down. Put battery in charger, red light still on then put charger in fridge to cool down. After this battery would take charge.
If car was left in shade you didn't have to cool down charger. But as we had a solar panel most times was in the sun.
Also if we were driving to at different spot, I would hold them in front of a A/C vent to cool them down this also worked.
If we had 4 wheelers or a ATV we wouldn't have been able to charge batteries. Need to carry a spare battery.
Found if you didn't charge batteries at lunch time or between spots battery would be flat before end of day's detecting.
This happened to both of us. again the need for a spare battery.
All of this is not good for Minelab's top of the line $10,700 metal detector.
Cheers,

Too Hot
The charger tells you when the battery is too hot by showing the red light. I think when this happens it stops charging to protect the battery and charger. With this said I would like to ask the question. Why didn't Minelab design a charger with a cooling fan like the one on the SDC2300. Makes sense to me especially in hotter climates.

The sdc uses a enloop charger that has a cooling fan.

Re: 7000 battery charger
I have had an intermittent problem with the red light coming on, but never if the engine is running. Usually the red light came on if I was charging the battery and the wireless speaker together.
I also tried using a fully charged backup battery, but after 2 charges the red light comes on so I think the car battery needs to be in good condition/fully charged.

Re: 7000 battery charger
mate got his 7000 today
he has a Toyota Prado, plugged in his charger and exactly same deal as my Troopy
after a couple of mins charging with the cigar lighter socket
the red light starts flashing on the charger until you start the engine and it charges ok
don't think its anything to do with the heat only been mid 20s today
the charger works fine if using the crocodile clips supplied direct on the battery
batteries are perfectly fine on my troopy and his prado
might just be a Toyota thing
I might try running a permanent live (fused) 12 volt point from the start battery inside the car
so I can plug in any time
regards

240 Volt Charger
My post previous was about the 240 volt charger. When the battery gets hot you get a red light. I think it stops charging to protect the charger and battery. I notice the 2300 has a cooling fan in it. One would have thought the one for the zed could have had one incorporated in it. this seems to be a design fault that Minelab should look at fixing.

Re: GPZ 7000 Charger
As in the manual page 9 († For input voltages between 11 and 12 V DC, the charger will still operate however the battery will take longer to charge if the power LED is flashing red.) This not what was happening to us.
The red light was steady on red not flashing. While driving with a 12v and above power supply (New Battery and alternator charging up to 13.6 volts) Red light would change to a blinking green light when unit and battery cooled down.
Car was locked in hot sun for solar panel charge (separate battery to main)

thanks pedo
as you say on page 9 in the small print it does state the charger will still work but take longer to charge with flashing red light
I looked thro the instruction manual more than once (honestly I did ) but missed the small print
must have been one of those MAN LOOK things my ex used to tell me about so often
thanks mickb
