Which detector for gold, mine lab gt1600 - coin master 5000/d
Hi I am new to the forum and prospecting, and I am from victoria, and just wondering which of these 2 detectors, will be better for finding gold
Mine lab gt1600
Coinmaster 5000/d series 1
I understand they are old and no good, but I have both of these already for nothing, I have no problem digging holes and then scanning the dirt I pull out, not trying to find easy way out of work. Just want to know what one is best for gold and small gold thanks.

Re: Which detector for gold, mine lab gt1600 - coin master 5000/d
Neither Mike
Unfortunately gold of the Size and Depth that these machines could read is long gone.Detecting in Victoria is now close to 50 years old.Minelab thru the SD GP and GPX series of machines (the best detectors ever built) are the reason that gold has become scarce. The SD Series did a great job on the Deep stuff ,the GP series was an improvement in the Mid to Shallow gold and the GPX series has a bias in finding smaller deeper.
What must be remembered is that these machines can find a coke can size piece of
gold at 1 Metre. On the other side the SD will find a .5 grammer to 5 inches an GP will find a .3 grammer to 4 inches and the GPX machines can find .05 grammers.
So you can see that Minelab have covered most levels. My next guess is the new GPZ7000 will be a combination of all these programs.
So what to do.My advice is to at least buy a machine where you have a chance.Prices on secondhand machines are the best they have ever been.Whether its the economy or the eminent release of the GPZ7000 these machines are great value.Saw a GPX5000 go for $4250 on ebay the other day and a GP3500 for $1900
The best Value for Money Machines are
In the SD series the SD2200d
In the GP series the GP3500
In the GPX series The GPX 4500
I put the SD2200 and GP3500 as the best of their series because of ease of operation(press button tracking)and the GPX4500 as it is not far off being a GPX5000 but the pricing is great.
If you are going to give this hobby a go remember that the above machines where the best in the world for there time.I would feel confident with any of them.Knowledge and experience comes next.Buy either and give this hobby a go.At the worst you would loose 10% of your purchase price in a years time. Each Minelab machine has biases in different depths and sizes and not one macine does it all.
Hope this helps
Cheers Dig

Dig you have summed it up about detector performance, but the prospecting side is always open for luck and persistence for any detector.

Only just noticed this thread.
Of the two detectors you have mentioned the GT16000 is the better gold detector.

Jack Pot '
I think Dig summed it up also which is a guide only
But it also depends if some hunters are looking for exercise ,unless they happen to step over some ground
that may be (untouched) you ( might) hit the jack pot ' If you don't have lots of cash to spare try any of the GP range at least
Cheers .GFE

Re: Which detector for gold, mine lab gt1600 - coin master 5000/d
I have used a lot of different tectas and although my old Vsat and Lobo ST can find down to 0.1g at around 5 inches in quiet ground, in very highly iron mineralised ground these size nuggs have to be very very close to the surface for these detectors. I have used them with good results in mullock heaps.
The question was which of the two detectors mentioned would be the better gold detector and I think that the GT16000 is by far the better of the two.

GT 1600
The 1600 is the better of the two having used both years ago. If you can find a FT 16000 better again. FT stands for fast track. That is my advice to you.

G'day & Welcome to the forum bonacini.
and an even bigger step up,towards its gold finding capabilities. A far better choice than the GT 1600. All the best in the pursuit for the golden ointment.
Cheers Kon.

Re: Which detector for gold, mine lab gt1600 - coin master 5000/d
Lol yeah I tend to go fair into something when I get hooked, the gt and coinmaste rare my pa's and had
A play with the gt finding bullets and stuff, I got a whites GMT as well lol, jumped in bIT early on that being a vlf, and bit hot in mineralized grounds, but have found heaps of tiny led shots and small brass Jean studs and mini nails, but could not get out of my head having a pi machine as well lol.
So now I got the kit and have no excuses for not finding something, so now I will get stuck into it.
Plus now if I drag a mate along he got something to swing around also.
IF I REALLY HAD DONE BIT MORE RESEARCH could have saved and got a 5000.
Was stretching my luck with the missus on a second detector being the GPX 4000 lol.
