distance from power lines ?
Hey all....got my new 5000 and took it out to a friend's farm to play about.....just tested on lead at various sizes and depths.....good learning...was using mono and could not get it to run perfect smooth....there were 22000v lines about 250m away....is that close enough to still interfere ???

Re: distance from power lines ?
G'day the hill folk,
They can even pick up EMI from a storm 200 km away, but I have worked areas within 50 mts from power lines and not had any interference from them. Then there are days you can't get within 100 mts with out the EMI happening. It can be very frustrating sometimes.
Cheers.
Mike.

Re: distance from power lines ?
I have a GPX 4500.
I went to close to big power towers near, Gympie, Queensland.
I blew 3 capacitors in the box.
$100 dollars later lesson learnt and post to Minelab service section they told me what I had done.
Regards Neale

Re: distance from power lines ?
Thanks for that info Neale, the EMI generated from those high tension power lines can be very strong. I can still remember a favourite fishing spot which had these big power lines running near and there was a gate we had to go through to get there. Every time we went to open the gate, we would get a tingle from it. This was caused by the strong Electromagnetic Field coming from the power lines.
Cheers.

Re: distance from power lines ?
Has any body else noticed that when detecting near high tension powerlines that if the wind is blowing towards you from the power lines there effect is a lot stronger & if the wind is blowing away from you & the powerlines then there effect is no where near as bad or even no effect at all? Cheers

High-voltage systems cause a corona discharge. This creates objectionable or hazardous compounds, such as ozone, this a break down of the air and the ions will be blown by the wind causing a disturbance on your detector. Very high voltage system usually have corona ring to limit this.
