power lines
hi all . just looking for some help on detecting under/ near power lines .. iam using a 4500 and as suggested by my mate a dd coil 11,, but is there any settings to help the 4500 not get so much interferrance. much apperated for any help .cheers buck

Re: power lines
Flick the switch to CANCEL MODE and up your GAIN to full, you will loose depth and sensitivity in this mode but it does work under power lines even with a MONO.

Re: power lines
this is for usin a small 8" coil
front cap
coil rx- double d
gb-tracking
soil-special
search-gen
vol-fp
special-extra sens
main tune-???
motion-very slow
rx gain-8 to 12
audio-quiet
audio tone- 62
stabilizer 8 to 10
this works for me near power lines with an 8" mono and i still get good depth and that.
cheers

You won't be using CANCEL MODE with a Mono coil............but with a Double D coil what you say will work quite well.
cheers dave
ps. well you could use cancel mode with a mono coil if you want but you won't be getting many signals...........if any.

Re: power lines
Beg to differ davsgold, used an 11" mono in cancel and gain full only a few weeks ago in the Triangle and was digging up bullets at 6" inches easily directly underneath powerlines.
CostasDee with his SD2200 and 14" DD coil gave up on the spot ( couldn't get the thing to shut up ) and put his detector back in the 4WD, but graciously accepted the role as my digger with the pick

Re: power lines
G'day TheGoldenChild
No worries mate, I,m not gonna argue with you, as you may well be able to do what you say, but it dosn't work like that on mine, I can pick up a large metal object at fairly close range with a mono in cancel mode, and it is a usefull tool for pinpointing when you have a target in a deep hole.
I know I have used a 6"coiltek mono coil for this purpose, what was looking like a largeish gold nugget down fairly deep, I used this small mono coil in cancel mode and it would just pick up the target when I had about the last 25mm or so to dig in the bottom of a 450mm hole, sure saved hitting the target with the pointy end of the pick.
cheers dave

Re: power lines
Dave not arguing with you mate, just suprised at the different results you got in CANCEL mode. Are you getting those results with a GPX 4500? Is there really that much difference between 2 similar machines?
Did you have your gain set to MAX? I can only put it down to different settings or maybe different ground type.

Re: power lines
I cant really comment as I am still using a 3500, all the GP's have worked as davesgold has suggested, as he said it made it easy to pinpoint with a small
mono coil.
I would have thought that was the case with the GPX's as well.
Be interestingto get JP's take on this.

Yes it was a GPX4500 that I was using.
This is from the Minelab manual.

Lucky I didn't read the Manual first otherwise I wouldn't have tried CANCEL with a MONO, and seen how well it works

Re: power lines
One coil you should always have is a Coiltek Anti-Interference coil, sometimes called a Salty as it also works extremely well on salty ground such as beaches and salt lakes. You can work right under power lines with one of these coils and have no loss of depth or sensitivity.
They work on all SD and GP detectors.
Sensitivity and depth is pretty much the same as a similar sized monoloop. We have a couple of "14 rounds and wouldn't be without them. We have used them on the salt lakes in WA and under power lines in Victoria and they have never failed to let us detect where others cannot go.
Cheers, Jim

Is this the same for the GPX5000? I recently went on holidays to the beach and didn't take my detector. Next time I would like to but not sure how it will go with the standard 11" coil. Is this where you would run the detector in salt mode? Maybe need to watch that DVD again!

Re: power lines
TheGoldenChild and Davsgold,
Now I am curious.
I have always heard that Cancel will not work with a Mono coil
so, I have never tried it.
TheGoldenChild, I may have missed it, what model are you using?
Does anyone else have direct experience with using a Mono coil in the Cancel mode?

Re: power lines
Actually Jim,
An AI coil will average 5% less depth and sensitivity then a same sized DD.
Also I do not agree with your comment that an AI coil has near the same depth and sensitivity as a similar sized mono.

Re: power lines
Hi Flak
While I've only detected in cancel by accident (geez this machine is running quiet today) I do use cancel often as an excellent pinpointing tool when in a big hole.

Flakmagnet the setup was a GPX4500 with 11" Commander Mono.
Gain and Stabilizer at MAX, I think this is the important part to getting some depth in CANCEL mode.

Re: power lines
Hi detectoraid, have you tested one on both salt lakes and under power lines? I have and an AI can't be beat on a salt lake or beach. Under most power lines you won't be able to get the same kind of sensitivity and stability out of a DD or mono, but that also depends on the power line wavelength. I recently worked directly under some acyive power lines and didn't even have to alter either my coil (mono) or settings.
On the other hand a bit over a year ago I worked with a 4500 and 14" AI under some pretty big power lines and found several nice little nuggets on the edge of a small patch of gold where everyone else had been trying to work by simply adjusting their settings and failed. The gold was only down an inch or so and easily detected. Had there been no power lines there the gold wouldn't have been there as a Dick Smith Special could have found them.
Carry an AI and get gold where others can't.
Cheers, Jim

Re: power lines
this would be just the same as running with no threshold i think, you do still get targets but lose a lot of depth. i just run a smaller mono coil and use the settings i have put down on this topic and then just do a tune until it runs quiet. i still get great depth.

Re: power lines
Flakmagnet, To add to others that have commented on the use of cancel. When i have a screaming signal i flick the mono coiled 4500 to cancel so as to pin point it, No problems. First time i ever did it was to find/pinpoint the offending target that was screaming at me with a signal over a metre in circumference. Pin pointed easily in cancel & dug done 32cm & out popped a 44.2g nuggett, Almost left it there as i was convinced it was a can but that's another story. Nuggett had halo effect going as once out of the hole it only gave a good signal when the coil was very near it in normal operation, didnt try going over it in cancel. Only prob with Cancel is YOU MUST REMEMBER TO SWITCH BACK, Lesson learned as i have been caught out once !
Cheers

Hi detectoraid, thegoldenchild, ash, MadTuna and others...
I can now see this is my problem, I have never the pleasure of pinpointing a whopper.
I am looking forward to going over to Cancel for that.
Thanks all...

Re: power lines
okay tomorrow i'll see if this cancel mode with a momop works as i'll be working around power lines. i'll try other coils and if the batterys are charged up for the video cam i'll put it on video.

Re: power lines
i had tryed it today and i would missed the gold i had picked up, i used the 11" commander mono and then used the 8" and nothing. i would just use the normal settings on the front cap (dd and mono).

Re: power lines
I have another spin on this debate, I wonder if the later coils are wired the same as the old SD's? The reason I say this is I have just redone a couple of my old sd coils to work on the 4500 as they perform really good but have lousy cable leads, anyway as they are mono's running in my workshop is pretty unstable the 11" is relatively okay but not the 18" so I put them in cancel mode, using my 1.2gm test nugget the 11" still picked it up at around 3" (compared to 7" in normal mono mode), the 18" was only 0.5" compared to 2" in mono mode. So whether there is some differences in 45's or coil plug wiring I have no idea as I have never opened the plug on my commander coils to see if they still have the same link setup like the SD plugs. The crux of the debate is cancel works on my 45 with a mono coil.... Scouts honour...

Re: power lines
G'day Ismael, were you running your 4500 on max GAIN and STABILIZER with the 11" Mono?
I found this the only way to get some reasonable depth out of CANCEL with my 11" Mono.

Re: power lines
I was only testing the coils in my workshop so the gain would have probably been around 12. I will be experimenting when I go bush towards the end of this month...
