Palmer River Gold Country Gallery 2013
Crossing the Palmer River at Dog Leg Crossing.
First Palmer River run for 2013
There has been a new crossing constructed at Dog Leg Crossing this year and the first water has run over for 2013, how it will hold up and react to full flood is yet to be known, but so far has been OK.
Recently the river ran and some visitors (and their cat !!!) were stuck on the northern side for a week, a few locals got them across by tinny, but their vehicle remained stuck here for another week before the water dropped enough to cross safely.
Observations and local traffic have determined :-
# When the water is waist deep it is running too fast to cross.
# When the water is waist deep and you cannot walk across, the crossing may have washouts.
# If you try to cross and hit a wash out you will get swept off the (built up) crossing and immediately end up in deep water downstream.
# When the water is waist deep and you do cross because of the river width , you will get water inside your vehicle.
There is a river level indicator at Palmer River roadhouse on the highway and it has been determined it takes about 20 hours for the water to reach Dog Leg Crossing.
When the indicator is showing 2.2m at Latest River Heights for Palmer R at Goldfields this converts to waist deep at Dog Leg Crossing 20 hours later.

Re: Palmer River Gold Country Gallery 2013
Good stuff Hagsy.
I reckon waist deep is too deep to be genuinely 'safe'.
If I've got the kids on board or anyone else for that matter, when I walk the water, if the willy gets wet....its too deep!!!
On my own, shite, I've seen fish through the side window!!
