Slide-on camper

hi there - does anyone else have a 'slide-on camper' on the back of their ute:?:    Are you happy with it?    I am going to sell my motorhome and look for a 4x4 ute and get a slide-on camper - that way, i can have the camper free-standing and use the ute for exploring etc., and can go places requiring high clearance if necessary, plus no extra registration/tyres etc.   The trouble with the motorhome is, I don't have a 'toad' vehicles following it and now that I'm interested in fosscking,  this new idea might be a better way to go.   (certainly less expensive!!)   Esme

I don't know why you'd want to take the camper off to go exploring ; mine only slightly compromises the 4wd-ability in the tightest of tracks in the Triangle ; tracks you couldn't consider taking a 4wd with van behind into.  

I reckon they're an excellent way to go, and am very happy with mine  . It's airy and bright, comfortable and certainly spacious enough. The Active Campers erect in literally 30 seconds, and close up in under a minute.
Solar power keeps the Fanta cool and the LED lights blazing, there's more than enough storage, and I still use less than 12l/100k. No parking problems in towns, either.

Due to the weight on the back the rear tyres wear noticeably quicker than the fronts, and I strongly suggest you try to get an accurate weight of any camper you're considering as the vehicle's GVM is easily exceeded. Also try also to ascertain the camper's balance point to ensure it's not behind the rear axle.

hi Phil - I meant that if i was set up at a camp, then I could remove the camper to explore tracks etc without having to uproot the camp. As it is now, I have a motorhome and have the same issue. But there are so many options - one of which, is to keep the motorhome and trade the Xtrail on a little Suzuki Jimny and tow it as now I'm thinking down the track, of selling up the house, and go 'house sitting' especially places near history of gold being found!!! I don't know if I could live in a camper for years - would prefer to house-sit while in the motorhome rather than live in their house if possible. I had a look at the website and am very impressed with the storage room under your camper - looks one of the best around - but am wondering if it would be very cold in winter with just the vinyl around the top walls? Certainly looks like it would be great ventilation in Summer. Esme

With the walls it has, the inside temperature is the same as the outside temperature !
