one for the techies...amp hours etc
Looking to fit my detector (gpExtreme) with a light weight battery. I have found a sealed lead acid battery a third of the weight of my current battery with the following specifications....6V, 4.5Ah, cycle use 7.2v~7.5v, standbye use 6.75v~6.0v, max charging current 1.35A .
I'm guessing that this will operate ok with my Extreme but will drain must faster than the current 12Ah battery, almost two thirds faster maybe. Am i on the right track...or way off lol
Would appreciate someones help.
cheers Matt

Why would you need a light weight battery? how much does the factory one weigh ten kilos?

Re: one for the techies...amp hours etc
Hi Matt, mungass is right. Don't wast your time with that battery. They have a very steep discharge curve and that means less power to your detector right from when you switch it on. Less power means a very unstable threshold and less sensitivety and depth as the battery charge quickly falls below 12volts while under load. Less power means less gold!
The Coilek pocket rocket is a far better option it is so light you can, if you wish, velcro it to the side of your detector control box, eliminating the long power cord.
And the pocket rocket is not just another battery. You will find more gold with it and more gold is what its all about. $400 is only about a third of an ounce of gold, 11 grams or so and with the pocket rocket you are pretty well sure to do better. And If you reckon $400 is a lot try the price of a new battery for the 4500
cheers, Jim

when out bush on your feet all day carrying first aid, water, food, pick, radio etc..etc... any weight saving is a bonus.gollstar wrote:Why would you need a light weight battery? how much does the factory one weigh ten kilos?
Not to mention the added performance the pocket rocket provides

I prefer not to wear an annoying vest of any kind, I currently carry my battery in the pocket of my duty belt so if I could lighten the weight even more would be even less annoying. less annoyance = more gold for me.

Jeez i carry heaps ive got an after market vest with a gazillion pockets it weighs a few kilos then the battery, wallet, 2 litres of water, i usally end up with several kilos of slate and quartz samples, a couple of hundred grams isnt going to be noticed.
Is that better.
Is that better.

Re: one for the techies...amp hours etc
lol....Did I say I don't like to wear vests...well thats because it gets in the way of my SAS back pack, I like to carry a weeks worth of suplies, first aid kit sat/nav and phone, 5 picks, 2 shovels, my set of golf clubs ( theres a nice green patch nearbye the diggings), I usually walk around 100km's uphill both ways....oh and did I mention a blow-up doll (gets lonely out there), .....so you can see why I would like to reduce my battery weight by just a few grams......it all makes a difference.....

Re: one for the techies...amp hours etc
Lucky I dont have any of these issues,I use an extention power cable long enough to reach my wife who follows me and carries everything including the backup car battery for emergency use,I also have a trained wombat for digging the holes and a zepplin balloon supporting the detector weight to save on a weight distributor. My wife also has a triangular frame with a pulley over her shoulder for winching the gold nuggets out of the hole.
hmmmmmm I wonder if my wife could also swing the detector!

TOYF, i use the Coiltek Li-ion battery system hooked onto my control box with a short lead. Works a treat as the only part of the detector attached to your body is your headphones or ext speaker. Beware of the unregulated el-cheapo copies of the Coiltek system on ebay. mallee00 and the mutt

TuronYellowFever.
In regards to your original question! You're pretty much spot on.
Considering the GP series detectors had inbuilt 5.9volt input max regulators, yes you should comfortably run your detector on this voltage with your 4.5amp/hr battery,[fully charged] for at least 4 hours before your detector starts beeping low.
Cheers kon61.

dont know if this battery or similar is available for your xtreme ,but i recently purchased a small converted video battery for $150 on ebay for my wife to use on her 4000,velcroed to side of box, i used myself this weekend, started reading 8.5 on satday morn at 8.0am and used all day ,dropped to 7.6 at 3.30pm but still giving strong signals, no harness, just the earphones, now looking for speaker to go wth it now, very happy wth its performance. also showed no harm to the unit ,still runs xellent, phill

Re: one for the techies...amp hours etc
I use a Coiltek Li-ion battery system and they work well BUT If I was buying a battery system at the moment,
I would buy Ismael's leadless battery system.
The battery will last all day and recharge in a very short time.
BTW. The GP's are regulated to around 5v so you won't lose depth with a 6v battery. What does happen is
that the audio is not regulated and when the 6v gets down a bit, the audio sounds less bright.
People believe this "depth loss", because it used to happen with the SD's.

Re: one for the techies...amp hours etc
Gday
I noticed quite a bit of a change with my gp extreme when I started to run it on the coiltek pocket rocket set up, for one it seemed more stable and responsive, and the difference in the weight was surprising, the best part was that when I put the battery and case inside the minelab case one the harness I could fit a spare one in there as well.
The gel cell batteries were fairly boofhead proof but required much more charging and for longer periods than the li ion ones, also I found that they tended to discharge very quickly and the loss of sensitivity was noticeable within 1 to 2 hours from start up with a fully charged battery, so I was always changing batteries, up to 4 times a day, that limited the distance I could wander away from the camp, but with the coiltek pocket rocket I could change batteries every four to five hours and and get the whole day out of the two batteries, meaning that if I was patch hunting I could go as far as I needed to during the day.
I just bought the regulator and charger from here, and on ebay I bought all the batteries at about half the price delivered to my door, if I was to go back to any sd or gp detector the first thing I would do is put it on the coiltek system, I had two complete sets of these in the end and used them for about 3 years, and never once had a failure, but like all things you have to take care of it and make sure that you always store the batteries fully charged, and keep all the contacts and plugs clean and free of dust.
If you can get one at the right price I wouldnt hesitate.
cheers
