Starting out
Hi, I'm from Bathurst NSW and I'm thinking of purchasing my first detector. I will mainly be hunting parks and the like looking for coins lost Jewellery ect but I would also like to head out once in a while to the hills and detect for gold, so a multi purpose detector is what I'm after. I have a budget of around $900 or so and Im currently looking and getting a Minelab X-TERRA 705 gold pack. I have been looking on youtube and forums and think this might be my ideal choice of detector, would you guys reckon this would be ideal for me...thanks.

G'day Bigfeller & welcome to the forum
I think the detector your getting will be much better suited to doing the parks etc for coins and jewellery then out in the gold field looking for nuggets.
cheers dave

Re: Starting out
Hi Dave,
Then what would you suggest in place of the 705? What about the Garrett AT Gold, that was my second choice.

I would suggest to buy a dedicated coin detector
If that's what your mainly gunna do
And hire a gpx from nuggets down under when your wanting
To go to the hills looking for gold
The old saying goes you get what you pay for
And if your doing mainly coins
Buy a tecta for that
You won't have to worrie about ground noise too much
But you'll need one that handles emi
Real good
As most parks around here
Have power lines over em

Re: Starting out
G'day Bigfeller
It's very difficult to get one detector to do all things well. You have to decide if you want to go after coins and relics etc and gold detecting on the odd occasion, or do you want to go seriously looking for gold.
Most of the VLF type machines are good at coins and relics etc but struggle when in a gold field looking for nuggets. The Gold bug 2 will find very small gold, and big stuff as well if it there, the Whites GMT will also find gold down to very small bits and could be used as a coin detector as well. Both these detectors are in you budget range.
If on lthe other hand you mainly want to look for coins etc then your choice of the X-terra 705 would be a good choice, and even with the gold pack is not the best choice for going after gold nuggets. Minelab PI machines are far better choice for gold hunting.
cheers dave

Re: Starting out
Thanks for the reply guys. Hiring a detector is out of the question as I only get Sundays to do anything due to my shift work. Think I will stick with my choice of Minelab 705 gold pack and give it a crack anyways, it cant hurt to try.
cheers

As Dave said its not a bad choice for coins
And will sniff out shallow gold
And we are here to help and advise
And share experience
Not tell ya what to do
Bf2
Ultimately your the one to make your decision
But I would recommend
A training day with the 705 at nuggets down
Under if you want the best of that detector
As they are fairly complicated (well for me anyway )
As its all dialed in on the LCD screen
And has lots of bells and whistles
But again that's your decision
And I wish you all the best in your endeavours

Re: Starting out
Yeh,your not wrong there onebob Bigfella, since your mostly going to be detecting for coin/relics etc the 705 gold pack will more than suffice for that odd day gold nugget detecting as well. From memory,I remember a mate of mine who had success finding small gold nuggets(o.5 to 1.5gm) with the X Terra 70 10x5 dd coil in jewelry mode than gold prospecting mode.Anyways,I'm sure you'll play around to find the best possible settings for what your chasing.Keep in mind that a 9ct gold ring in the ground will be more conductive as a detector signal(because of the high silver mixture) than an equivalent size gold nugget of high purity..
Cheers kon61.

Re: Starting out
We have gone off topic a little
But at least we had a little fun
With no an amosite
As I'm only 6foot 1 and bout 75 kg
And don't want to have to use my secret weapon
Against the big feller or big fella
And that is I'm a real fast runner
Thanks big fella and the big feller
And wish you both the best
