Map of the Palmer River region
Map of the Palmer River region shows towns, mountains, rivers, hotels, and camps and local industry such as tin mines. Though not clearly shown on the map the Palmer goldfields proved to be a very rich field. On 14 August 1872, William Hann's exploration party found gold in the bed of the Palmer River. His reports of the find led to the establishment of Cooktown and later Maytown (shown on the map). Alluvial gold was largely panned out by 1886 and gold mines were then established. Relief is shown by shading and spot heights.
