Information About Grosses Plain gold mine
Hello. This is my first post here. Im interested in finding about the old gold mine at Grosses Plain. Its about 35 km Down Barry Way past jindabyne towards vic border. Not The road to thredbo. I live out that way and the local Farmer has told me about this mine. Its still there with all the crushing equip Apparently. The problem is the land is now owned by a man from Canberra and he wont let anyone on his property. Any one with information that can help id love to contact. Now on a different note. I have been finding gold on my property, just by looking next to Quartz rock piles and digging around a bit. So far the biggest nugget is 4.1 g. I cannot find anyone around Jindabyne to talk to about finding gold. Im new to it and will be buying a detector soon, (any suggestions for a newbie $1000 to 3000 dollar range. ) Im would love to have some information to help start out. Books vids anything. I have searched alot on the internet but am not sure where to start. And lastly is there any where around my area Jindy to bombala delegate that is worth checking out. Thanks heaps and ive loved reading your topics. So far my total is 11.5 grams all Smallest nugget .67g. all found just by digging dirt. Cant wait for the detector. Thanks heaps
Peter

Re: Information About Grosses Plain gold mine
G'day jindy gold & welcome to the forum If I were finding gold on my own property, AND without a detector? I'd be whooping it up BIG time!! And I certainly wouldn't be too worried about anywhere else until I had made sure that I had cleaned up everything ... detecting, panning etc.
I'd be looking at purchasing a Minelab detector ... because I truly believe they are the best dedicated gold detector, if that is what you're looking for. There will surely be some advice forthcoming re other brands, and that's OK too, but I would still personally suggest a Minelab model ... the later the better. Keep an eye on eBay. And advertise here on site in the 'For Sale/Wanted' section. You might be lucky and pick up a GPX4000 for $3000, but you'd have to be lucky!!
The neighbour who refuses permission to access his land? Sorry, but I think you're stuck with that! He does have the last word, unless you can come to some personal agreement with him. Sometimes a percentage share is enough to sway that kind of person, or a nice bottle of red as a gift when you first approach him? But if he says No? ... b*gger! You're stuck with it!!
If you are trying to locate an old mine site? Maybe try Googling it. You'll be surprised at how much information is on the web, especially State Govt sites. Or perhaps use Google Earth in an attempt to locate it.
Hope that helps give you somewhere to start.

Re: Information About Grosses Plain gold mine
Thanks for the replies. Ive been looking at minelab stuff. Would love the 5000 but just breaks the bank for the minute. I plan on finding more on the land but figure the detector will save alot of random digging. As for the fella in jindy. Id love to come and take a look at the detector you have as i have never used a detector before and would love to pry as much info out of you as possible. You can send a message or call me on 0430813485 if you dont mind me pestering you to have a look. Im a cabinetmaker in jindy and will be leaving to go to canberra to do a job on tuesday but am normally around. have you tried anywhere around delegate or nimmitabel. Ive tried google for info on the mine and looked at google earth to see if i can see it , but no luck.
Thanks all again
ill show you my gold if we catch up. nothing special but cost me nothing.
Cheers Pete

Thanks heaps. I just want to look at the old mining stuff. Not to prospect there. I respect him not wanting people on his land , but i think its a shame that the council cant save some of our local history. Most people dont even know this mine is there and ive never seen it listed anywhere in any records that ive been able to find.
I take your point on finding gold in my backyard but ist the fun of it getting out and exploring new places, meeting new people. Im sick of following sheep and digging up their poo lol.. Enjoy

Re: Information About Grosses Plain gold mine
Pete got a bit of local knowledge from a few of the old timers around here ... apparently it was a shotgun seeding not a real deposit.

Alpine Way
Hi, I've got 150 acres up on Alpine Way. Today I found some quartz veins. Anyway, my land is near old Chinese diggings and Little Thredbo Diggings. I welcome everyone that wants to have swing on my land on the condition you teach me. I am a geologist but new to the hobby. I am currently researching the Paupong gold diggings form the the 1880s. Please feel free to call me, 0481721726.
