You read about all the Aussie retailers winging about people buying online from overseas, well when the item that they are buying is exactly the same as here and for half the price can you blame them.

Just looking at the Garrett Pro Pinpointer in the US its $127.45 + $15.95 international postage, here in Aussie its $235 Seems like that its not working both ways. That should come out at about $145 here so why are we being charged $235 ?

Simple, current stock was probably bought back when the Aussie dollar was worth less against the Green Back along with import duties etc, which means the dealer would have to sell for below cost to get parity, also US prices do not usually quote the applicable local sales tax.

Yes, but all that does is explain why people are buying overseas instead of in Aus.

Johnathon, you and I both know that you only pay the local sales tax for that particular U.S. State if you are a resident of that State so is not applicable to purchasing a detector in the States from Australia....However being over Au $1,000 if anyone thinks that US purchase price is a landed cost here in Australia you should consider not only the substantial USPS cost but also the applicable GST here in Australia and you have to obtain a Customs clearance using a Clearance house all at substantial add on costs....I suggest these are the costs which will eat away your potential savings plus you need a travellers adapter for the charger as US are different prongs <as you would all be aware>...........I bought a 'you beaut' laptop from the States and by the time I paid all the above add ons...it would have been cheaper to go to Harvey Norman and I would have had the local warranty..so I suggest anyone thinking about buying a GPX5000 from the States better consider the big picture....Hoo Roo
P.S. With Dollar parity now I would agree that any item under the magic Au $1,000 which does not attract GST or customs notice...is going to be far cheaper buying in the States on line than here in Australia..but not the big ticket items.

So if i wait say 4 weeks i should see on of 2 things happen with the price of the 5000. 1 The US price will increase to match our pumped up dollar as the Price in OZ stays stable. or 2 The price in the US stays the same and our OZ one drop below the $6G mark.
Would that be a fair observation ???.
To throw a spanner in the works if our dollar reaches over the green back say by 5-10c and nothing changes with the pricing, judging it would cost around 15% (5% Duty 10% gst) extra to import and freight around the $200 mark id say it would be worth considering this option.
Warranty you say................. yes warranty hmmmmmmmm, so far im yet to see anything on the ML web site stating that i would have to send it to the US for repair.
ML are very vague about any terms etc but i did find this on the FAQ section.

We are sure our customers will agree that this is an exciting and progressive step. By this action, Minelab asserts its ongoing commitment to delivering detectors designed and manufactured to world-class standards AND its willingness to support that commitment with an increased warranty period available to our valued Distributors, Dealers and Customers. As a result, with the introduction of this new, consistent Warranty period, any Minelab owner, worldwide no matter where they live or use their detector can now benefit from a uniform standard of warranty coverage.

Reading the about seems to suggest i could in fact return my detector to SA for repair, but as i am unable to locate the full terms and conditions (why it is not on the ML site is beyond me, or i am looking in the wrong area) this could all be wishful thinking.
Just one other point ML don't own ML anymore Codan do, different corporate structure fellas with different goals.
Regards
John
PS and by all means if someone can put up the full terms and conditions and show the above is not correct pls do (regarding warranty), i wont take it the wrong way just make sure its fact not hear say fiction.
And the cheapest Ive heard of here is $6400 drive away.

Re: Warranty not being transferable...

Limited Product Warranty Conditions:
4.0: To the maximum extent permitted by law this warranty...
4.1: is personal to the purchaser identified in the Warranty Registration Card ("Purchaser") and is not transferable.
4.7: is limited to repair, replacement or service (at Minelab's sole discretion)....
5.0: The Customer must return any defective component to Minelab, whether direct or through an authorized service centre, with freight prepaid. While under warranty, the repaired or replaced components will be returned to the customer with return freight prepaid by Minelab.

I suppose it's not in Minelab's interest to be posting parcels internationally at their own expense. But they also need to control the amount of "grey market" detectors as well. That includes fakes and rebirthed detectors. The best way to deter this activity to to reduce international transactions and allow local markets to service locally purchased detectors. In theory, if an item is purchased overseas, the buyer might try to hold the manufacturer to local warranty obligations which would obviously NOT apply if the item was purchased in another country where different consumer laws apply. So by the very act of purchasing overseas, you are bound by the goods & services laws in that particular country. The general consensus in Australia is that the warranty only applies to the country of purchase and you may notice that the warranty cards now come with three portions (Australian Warranty, American Warranty and European Warranty)... you tear off the portions that are not applicable and fill out the one that applies. The card that is mailed in will have the country/region of purchase on it and the card you get to keep is titled "Limited Product Warranty".

ie: I can't see any legal reason why a manufacturer of any product in THIS country would be compelled to service an item purchased in ANOTHER country just because the buyer bought it from an internet site that 'promised their products were authentic yet cheaper'.

Of course, it's up to an individual to decide for themselves and some people claim here to have managed to get one of these machines into the country with no major hassles. In the end, trusting the seller is what it comes down to. Just be sure the product is authentic before you send all that money to them.

We are seeing many price increases of items from Oz...Coiltek just increased their prices
and I understand NF may not be far behind. I know it may seem like a one way street but don't
think that is quite what is happening.

OK mmmmmmmmmmm , " sell for below cost to get parity " ???? if parity was the cause of the price difference !!!! why hasn't the price varied in any direction here in Australia to follow the price trend in the USA? or vice versa !!! Now the shops in the USA have a justification to increase the price of their GPX5000 that they had purchased on the old price as you would suggest Jonathan Porter people are stuck with old stock that they had purchased before the Australian dollar nearly is matching the USA dollar on parity. Lets not forget also the Australian dollar didn't jump from approximately 66cents to 1 USA dollar over night to approximately 99cents to 1 USA dollar now as we speak. So its not like importers have been caught with their pants down with new stock costing more and remember the Garrett pinpointer is nearly double in price " $127.45 + $15.95 international postage, here in Aussie its $235" or has the Australian dollar nearly doubled in strength compared to the USD ???? I must be missing something here also ??? LOL

As freshwater stated,".So if i wait say 4 weeks i should see on of 2 things happen with the price of the 5000. 1 The US price will increase to match our pumped up dollar as the Price in OZ stays stable. or 2 The price in the US stays the same and our OZ one drop below the $6G mark.

Would that be a fair observation ???." the Australian dollar has climbed to a all time high compared to the USA dollar ( this has progressed gradually over several years ) we should either see the GPX5000 increase in price or Minelab start giving them away here in AUstralia LOL ??? Or the USA market place is flooded with Minelab GPX5000 by the bucket load before the AUstralian dollar was around 55 USA cents per dollar which we know was not the case LOL. So parity has nothing to do with it as far as I'm concerned.

We have missed the important part of this conversation ???? Why are the Minelab GPX5000 MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper over in the USA even though they are made here in South Australia???? Apart from the initial question asked by Jim Beam on Fri Oct 01, 2010 9:38 pm," Best deal on a 5000 ?"

Who cares about all the business transaction that will follow if one purchases a Minelab from the USA at this stage? ( ie customs , stamp dutys and applicable taxes , freight , warranty so on so on ??????? ). We are aware there will be hidden costs and pit falls if one is about to import a unit. one would have to do his /her home work properly before going down this path.

If we follow the famous words of Dick Smith, " BUY AUSTRALIAN MADE !!!! and Harvey Norman, " BUY AUSTRALIAN MADE !!!! support you country and have the AUstralian dollar remain here in Australia. LOL what a bunch of hypocrites they sell 99% of all imported products !!! I wish I was a millionaire LOL!!!

The fact of the matter is we as Australians are pay more for a product that is produced here in Australia??? My question is Why ????? and the monolopy and price fixing that is going on in the Minelab industry here in Australia.

Be honest with thos answer, Who has always payed FULL RECOMMENDED RETAIL PRICE ???? or do you shop around ????? this question doesn't apply to you guys who earn a six figure salary and a company car LOL !!!! or are affiliated or work for Minelab

cheers

Buzz off Doug/24kt.
I see you've run out of places to troll with your Anti-Minelab rhetoric.

Those are Fake GPX detectors from China and Turkey - the same ones that have been flooding Ali Baba.com for the last 8 months.
You claim to know your stuff. But those detectors are so far below cost that it should be obvious to all an sundry what you're buying off that website.

And you already know this, you peanut.

LOL! It's the joy of having a large circle of professional interests coupled with very good connections.

And I don't care who you are. Your posts are inflammatory - but I believe I know your "reseasch style" and propensity for posting useless quotation and derivative remarks on Prospecting forums.

As such, you are defined by your own actions as what is known as an Ïnternet Troll.

For a professional person that you claim you are !!! nero_design, why such arrogance ? and why do you have to resort to name calling ? not once but many times !! Looks like bully tactics

I'm not anti " Minelab " I'm merely stated we in Australia are paying more for a GPX5000 " don't start twisting words around.

nero_design this is a perception of your reality !!! "As such, you are defined by your own actions as what is known as an Ïnternet Troll." remember nero_design you have over 758 posts in less than 2yrs LOL, " Number of posts: 758 Registration date: 2008-11" and I have posted 23+1 = 24 still have a long way to go to catch up to you nero_design some two years of posting LOL

On this note this will be the last and final time i respond to any of your remarks if we can not get along in a civilized manner as two adults not like little spoilt children

24kt......I had a month or so in Jakarta not long ago....have you actually ever dealt with Indonesian Companies??...really...would you actually send money Western Union in the expectation of receiving anything more than heartburn or dyspepsia..?....apart from perhaps Mexico, Java/Indonesia would be the most corrupt country on this earth...its endemic to all levels and all layers of Government..this is not touristy Bali...this is Java mate...a totally cash society...Jakarta unofficially 20 million people with 95% living third world poverty....dont even deal with the 5% obscenely rich.. thats how they got it....and they know how to keep it and yours......you're going to buy what?..let me get this right..detectors made in Australia.....sent to Indonesia so you can purchase at a third of the price?..and you're going to find four other drongoes as well?.......the detectors likely wouldnt even make it past their own customs if someone actually sent them.....the "tips" you would have to pay to all the extended palms... in the whole line of exporting/importing would be more Rupia than you would pay for a Warranted genuine 5000 from a Dealer here....but go on do it, and post your results here..I love a joke as much as the next person....LOL.... Razz Razz What a Face Hoo Roo
P.S. Did you see they sell Brand New 2010 GPX4000's as well with full guarantee and the photo has a Nugget Finder round coil as well but they forget to mention that in the picture they've pinched........now you're giving me heartburn mate just looking at their drivel.....

Best deal on a 5000 ? - Page 2 Empty Do you know 110% certainty where the minelab metal detector GPX-series ( 4000, 4500,4800 & 5000 ) are manufactured

Post  24kt Wed Nov 03, 2010 8:24 am

Hi larry303, will take all that into consideration what you have said . Firstly before my money or anyone else for that matter exits this great country I will be doing my homework.

Just for one remote moment if this is the genuine article at that price one can hope. LOL Embarassed

Yes I understand what most people are saying if its too good to be true it probably is NOT true.

larry303 can you answer one question for me please ?as of yet no one has answered this question for me.

Do you know 110% certainty where the minelab metal detector GPX-series ( 4000, 4500,4800 & 5000 ) are manufactured ?

24 kt when a deal sounds to good to be true it proberly is.
Bit of a risk with $2G+ not something id be interested in.
I have noticed new 4500 from (ebay forgot what country) for $3700 + del, i also noticed a forum member had brought one and the feed back was the real deal, but seriously under $3G for a brand new 4500 even 4000 dont think so.

It appears Minelab have manufacturing operations in Australia, Europe and the United States. Maybe you could give them a call, or send them an email, to clarify where the metal detectors are manufactured. I thought it was in Aus, but I could be wrong.
