sd2200d and sd2200v2 Empty SD2200D v SD2200v2

Post  Tony2 21st April 2009, 12:16 pm

A while back I did some in ground tests between the old green box SD2200d and SD2200v2.

I know buried target tests are not ideal but my purpose was to check performance between the two units as some people thought there might have been some.
I buried a range of small lead targets (3). One piece was 1 gram, the next was 5 grams and the last piece was approx 30 grams.

I can honestly state these differences;

1. There was no noticeable depth difference on the 30 grammer
2. There was no noticeable depth difference on the 5 grammer
3. The SD2200v2 gave a clearer audio response on the 1 grammer
4. The SD2200v2 at all times gave a smoother threshold (less EMI feedback) than the SD2200d. *** I run the reg battery...supposedly smooths the threshold?? ***

The tests were repeated on 3 different days and the results were identical.

Not the perfect scientific test but still worthwhile I feel.

The SD2200v2 is still in production because of 3 reasons (in my opinion).

1. It is still a great performer and is 95% as effective as the later models.
2. It's price point is very enticing...especially for newcomers. The R&D on this unit is paid for many times over from the earlier SD2200d.
3. They are still selling strongly.

Hope this bit of info helps,
Tony2

Hi There Tony2.

A few years back,I ended up selling my 2200d,updating to a GP3000 and then a couple of months later, decided to buy a new SD2200V2 as a back up.Sad to say,for $3900 I did not get similar results as my 2200d.Yes theV2 was more quieter to run,and the threshold was smoother,on the same7.3v regulated battery system, using the same settings,on the same ground but,it saddens my to say I was losing depth.Around 20% more depth than my 2200d.No matter what I tried, settings wise, different ground conditions, different targets etc.I could not get it compatible to my 2200d.I then sent it back to Minelab, got it checked out,and was told the machine was in perfect working order.I gave it another couple of days testing, with the same results.I cannot explain as to why or how,it just didn't pull the same depths as my 2200d.And yes my 2200d was not modded, but factory standard. To cut a long story short,I ended up trading it in for another 3000.I just wonder if,all of the V2s were made the same or I just copped a duffer.

Happy Prospecting

G day Kon61
I've heard that before but a mate and myself did a heap of tests between a 2200d (45 serial) and 2200v2, same reg power supply, same coils, different coils etc and we had virtually the same results as Tony2, smoother threshold, crisper more defined audio on smaller targets.
I should point out i guess that it was the same 2200v2, i brought it off Tony2.

Hi Fisherman.

Brett,I have no doubt that the testing Tony2 and yourself have done between the 2200V2 & The 2200d were thorough and accurate. But now you've really got me thinking.Since both of you got similar results, and my three different size lead ball targets(the largest being 30gms buried at 14 inches in mineralized ground on the actual goldfield itself)could not be heard at all using the same old 14 inch round coiltekDD on the V2 scraping the coil on the ground. The targets have been buried there for the last 12 years, and I made shore that my old 2200d could pick up all three targets, faint but clear on the scrape.Could it be that I had a good freak 2200d that i sold off? Well I guess I'll never now that now.

Cheers for now kon61

Hi all
To compare The sd2200d and the sd2200v2 is like comparing apples and oranges. The sd2200v2 has never been considered as one of the green machines. In fact it has always been thought of in the category as a not fully optioned blue machine.

That's the best description i've heard and pretty much sums it up.
