What is this?.....Red Quartz?
Gday everyone, Ive been panning up a storm lately and have been comming across small red coloured transparent rocks. Ive been told that quartz can be found naturally in a range of colours. Is this true?
p.s Its the little one on the right of pic. I have a few bigger ones I could take a pic of if it would help.

Re: What is this?.....Red Quartz?
Hi Goldmember, We get a few of these little red stones when panning in Misery Creek. I keep telling my old mate David that iv'e found another ruby whenever i find one in my pan. I take them home and have about 20 in a jar. I have been told they are might be red zircons. Cheers Grumpy.

if they were found where sapphires are found, they could be rubies which are red sapphires

Re: What is this?.....Red Quartz?
99% chance it is zircon. That shade of red is spot on for the majority of zircons (although they can be many colours and colourless). Hard to confirm the exact crystal form in the image, but the slightly elongate crystal shape is also spot on for many zircons found.

Looks like a red zircon to me, as well!
They are not worth nothing but they are still pretty.
My wife and I got a whole bunch in a creek near Armidale.

Re: What is this?.....Red Quartz?
it is a Zircon. The key to identifying it, is its crystal structure - tetragonal
hope that helps.
