Goldfield(s) near Ricmond, NSW
G'day all,
Just wondering if someone could suggest a Goldfield/Creek near Richmond, NSW
that I could go panning/detecting this weekend. Have never tried fossicking in NSW
as am now living in QLD. Will be flying down for business.
The Car Hire the company booked says "Unliited Kilometers"!
Do we go visit our friends or the Goldfields...Hmmm...
I understand Lithgow is only about an hour away from Richmond. Would appreciate any
advice/suggestion. I can pack my pans and my Xterra 705 can literally fit in my backpack.
Cheers
Paul

Have a look through "patches 1" post.
Otherwise go through the NSW section on this forum.
This photo is near Oberon- somewhere i always wanted to have a look after i heard someone panned a 3 gram nugget there somewhere.
[img][/img]
A link to the LGA map for the area.
http://www.oberonaustralia.com.au/images/maps/oberon_lga_2007.pdf
Check just west of Oberon on that map and it shows fossicking areas. Not sure if you need a permit to be in the state forest if they are dedicated fossicking areas? Some of them are definately not in the state forest though. The areas are also frequented by gem hunters so keep your eyes peeled if panning.
happy hunting. FF

Re: Goldfield(s) near Ricmond, NSW
Hold your horses: Gold WAS found in Richmond (or at least within 5 km of the district) which lies on the Sydney side of the Blue Mountains. Workers who were removing grates from a crossing over a waterway were surprised to find fine gold particles trapped in the grates. From the accounts that I know of, the gold was very fine and was not concentrated enough to be worth pursuing.
We're talking about a gram or less for nearly a year or two's worth of water flow over those grates.
Probably seeped out of the sandstone from the former sea level deposits laid down tens of millions of years ago.

Re: Goldfield(s) near Ricmond, NSW
Thanks for the comments guys.
Im willing to travel upto 2 hours to see colour this weekend.
Was hoping to visit a carravan park of some sort near goldfields where I can pan/detect.
I'm sure Ive read somewhere about such a location. A bit busy now with work. Ive got to get ready for
My presentation tomorrow yet all I can think about is bloody Gold!!!
If everything goes as planned, I maybe moving into the area and have the Mudgee Region Goldfields
As my weekend prospecting grounds.
Cheers,
FN

Re: Goldfield(s) near Ricmond, NSW
Just to throw a cat amongst the Pigeons,I know a young bloke who runs a sluice behind the Penrith lakes. He has been kicked out a few times by the owners of Mulgoa quarries, but has filled up a match box full of fines.
I have also seen 3 blokes sluicing on dark night at Yarramundi bridge.
Given the amount of round river wash there,id say the gold came down the cox`s river or was washed via the cox`s from ancient river beds now extinct.
Fatninja,
I would stay at Windeyer c/van park and do some panning in Merroo creek. I heard a bloke was getting good colour on flood gold where Queens pinch rd crosses the creek. The whole region had big rains earlier in the year which moved alot of colour and also filled Burrendong dam.

Re: Goldfield(s) near Ricmond, NSW
gold is where you find it....
check this at Coxs River, Little Hartley that someone else has found and is a old known area also. Much closer than anything else mentioned.
http://alluvialgprospectors.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=3320
In the Sydney Water catchment area (a no go zone) near Lake Burragorang there is a mountain which has had gold found around it's base- with the source never found.... have always wanted to check it out but it's a no go zone.
This link gives a great history of Oberon and surrounding areas for gold. Type gold in the search bar, and away you go. http://www.oberonaustralia.com.au/OberonHist.pdf
Cheers FF.

Re: Goldfield(s) near Ricmond, NSW
G'day ferrousfinder,
- Those specimens in the photo are amazingly rough for rocks found in a river.
- There is one big error in that history of Oberon. It says there was a huge nugget found at the junction of the Isabella and Abercrombie Rivers. This is not true unfortunately for me, as I own the land there at the junction.
Cheers,
Jig.

Howdy Jig, the species, I said Coxs river... they may be from Hughes creek mine area.... dunno, not my post but i am sure he said coxs river? I do remember doing some survey work around little hartley years ago. Froze my nads off in middle of winter.
Were you around in 1851 Jig or has the property been passed on since then. Not calling you old or anything Jig.

Re: Goldfield(s) near Ricmond, NSW
FF,
He said he found them while fishing - I guess that means they were found in a river or creek - they did not look to me, like they came from a river or creek.
Although I am a pretty much a brain dead old fart, I was not around in the 1850s. I wish I had been there with my 5000 though ! That report of the big nugget at the junction of the Abercrombie and the Isabella was poo pooed by the Reverend "what's his name" who was that famed geo of the time.
I guess, like everyone else who lives in Sydney, I am interested in any detectable areas within 100 km of home. I guess you are more interested in areas near Woop Woop !
Cheers,
Jig.

Re: Goldfield(s) near Ricmond, NSW
Fellas,
There have been gold finds at Hassan`s walls near Little hartley and gold in Rivulett creek. I used to fish the Duckmaloi river years ago and there is a huge open cut with drives just down river from the oberon rd and a few surfaced areas further down river. Might be a sneaky spot to do some detecting.
Are there any working at the junction on your property Jig?

Rev WB Clarke ?.... famed geo of the day
It may have been poo pooed Jig, cause just before that they were trying to keep gold discovery hush hush until they (the government) had worked out how to exploit the situation as usual....
yeah, as Gus said, any diggings? Would you like some?
I would bring throat wettener of your choice
Would love to visit the area one day.
Gotta love the name "duckmaloi" eh
Cheers. FF

Re: Goldfield(s) near Ricmond, NSW
FF,
Gold fever was already in full swing at that time - they were past the days of trying to hide the gold finds.
You can come down and we will have a wander and a detect if you like. I have never detected there, but Duckmaloi came down once with me (before I had ever detected) - he found plenty of .22 bullets, but not much else.
I have panned for gold in the Isabella with very modest success, but I have got a great spot for sluicing lined up, at the bottom end of a small gorge section.
If you want to, send me a PM and I will give you my email address. I am retired, so I have plenty of time.
Is the Abercrombie far from Woop Woop ?
Jig.

Gus,
Thanks for that info. I will have a look around next time I pass that way.
No, I have not found any workings on my property.
All the best,

Gold found at Lane Cove in 2002
I read an interesting quote (linkbelow) he other day that workers building the bridge on Epping Rd over Lane Cove River in 2002 found "lumps" of gold. Not sure what "lumps" mean but sounds like little well visible pickers.
I reckon it would have come from the drilling of pylons and who know how deep they were. They would have gone a good way into the bedrock.
It didn't say how much or which side of the bridge and it's a shame its all National Park there i think.
Cheers FF.
