potato patch burrendong dam
Can anyone help me out with where the potato patch is as i have got some private that runs down to the dam and this could be his neighbour. A map or his name would be helpful certainly wouldn't want to jump the wrong fence. I asked the land owner and he wasn't sure. I asume this place (Patato patch) is between entrance to dam and the wall maybe Cheers Tim

Re: potato patch burrendong dam
The Potato Patch is on the far (Eastern) side of the Burrendong Dam. It is visible on the BURRENDONG 8732-N Toppographic maps for the area and is NOT on the same side as the Dam wall. It is on the far side of Lake Burrendong... 4.5kms across the water next to Devil's Hole Creek and on Potato Ground Gully. Behind it is a ridge called Top Diggings which has a small dam at the base (very tiny) called Fine Gold Dam. All these names were probably set in stone about 130 years ago. If you are exploring the area, the only map available in the Toppo range is about (I think) 1:50,000 and it doesn't show you the property boundaries like the 1:250,000 maps do.
Don't get caught on the Potato patch. The area attracts prospectors like a magnet because of the name. Looking at the names of the gullys and ridges around it, you can see why prospectors look at it and go out of their way to get to it. The guy who owns it used to spend all his spare time driving about and looking for trespassers and he's real old-school about punishing anyone he catches. Two members of this forum were run off with a shotgun from there about two years ago. He can't be bribed (people have offered him everything and anything including large cash sums), he has no interest in Gold (or so he says) and he tells the locals that he's saving the property for his grandkids.
/Heard from ONE person that he may have passed away in 2010 but note that this is unconfirmed because he heard it from someone else. You could probably ask the Rangers for confirmation because they used to discourage people from landing boats there. But it's become something of a mythical story amongst prospectors that this guy will find you if you go there. Even in the dark. My own mentor was talking to another prospector about the area some years ago and he was really adamant that the guy who owned it was batsh*t insane about protecting his boundaries. Some real macho guys with GPX's went over and tried detecting below the high-tide mark (right on the Potato Patch) thinking they were immune to his ravings about a year and a half ago. They left with their tails between their legs and some buckshot in their gear.
Couple of members here say it's a lovely paradise for the prospector to detect on and that I'm over accentuating the situation. In which case feel free to write about your experiences here if you decide to go over there.

Re: potato patch burrendong dam
The first time i was caught on the potato patch by the owner, he shot me dead on the spot, he than hung my carcase from the nearest tree as an example to other would be trespassers... and the wedge tailed eagles feasted on by hide.
The second time i was caught there, he run me down after an hr long chase with his new 4x4, tied a rope round my neck and strung me up on the same tree..... where i swung in the breeze for all would be prospectors to see.
The third time he caught me there, i stopped to investigate a signal on a mullock heap, one swing with my pick was all it took for the IED (improvised explosive devices) to blow my butt to kingdom-come....he than tied a rope around all that was left of me and hung my left leg from that god forsaken tree.
The fourth time i was busted there by the owner was in the dead of night, i was dressed in camo and using night vision gogs.....so was he, he gave me the rope and we walked to my tree, where i hung myself.... he then used me as a pinata till the sun came up.
Fictional stories are my favorite.

Thanks guys the patch i have is on the western side of the dam so i'm safe and don't have any interest going there if he doesn't allow people to go on there. was talkin to a land owner that backs onto the dam, the department of water own the country from top of ridge anywhere water runs diectly into dam, maybe useless info. Thanks Tim

Re: potato patch burrendong dam
Narrawa, haha mate that was classic!
Still, probably a good idea for people to avoid going onto this mans property if he doesn't want you there.

Re: potato patch burrendong dam
X-terra, still gold being found on the outskirts of the dam, you should do ok if your persistent enough with the trashy areas many of us avoid with the PI machines.
Iv seen the 705 find gold there so know its more then capable if thats the detector your using, unfortunately the better areas are submerged at the moment.
If your able to get onto some land around there your better off keeping it quiet.

Re: potato patch burrendong dam
Simple solution.. Be friend him at the pub, become his mate, and ask later down the track for a swing....

Potatoes aren't conductive enough to be detected even with GPX's !
