Hydration tips?
Hi Team
starting to get warm up here again in the pilbara all the grey nomads have headed south leaving nothing behind except a few 4bie tracks and neetly backfilled holes
the situation:
its 2.00pm in the arvo about 38deg and not a breth of wind, you have managed to wander about a km from the car and you drink bottle, have just picked up a couple of half grammers and you know there are more to be had. the headake is just starting to kick in and you know you need to keep drinking down tools back to the car......
now ive got my winter hydration plan sorted it involves a 6 pack of carlton dry
now to get summer sorted, can you get a camel pack / harness setup combo? do they work and how much to they hold?
maybe the army style canteen is a better option?

Re: Hydration tips?
mad tuna use to use a camel back and a lot of people i go detecting with use them. you can get them for various sizes.
the headache from dehydration IMO is the worst one you can get. even after consuming fluid, the headache lingers. this is a dangerous warning sign when your out in the bush and you must treat a headache as seriously as you would a snake bite. drop what your doing and go get water and call it a day.
the gold ain't going anywhere.

Re: Hydration tips?
My partner and i have cheap $40 back packs from BCF, have had them now for the last 3-4yrs. They have a 3L water bladder in them with a hose that hangs over your shoulder and a mouth piece you bite on once in your gob.
Problem with these models is they tend to leak a few drops after you have a drink, and that use to irritate me. So i replaced the mouth piece with a petrol tap off a lawn mower.
No more leaks....... and i'll not be running out of gas either.

Re: Hydration tips?
Thermo camel back pack 3 letre version.
I used this when i was prospecting up at panawonica in the hieght of summer, keeps your water nice and cool for a long time, and if you want to stay cool i would highly recommend a cooling thermal vest, there are a few companys that make these.
Underarmor does a cooling undergarmet aswell, i believe Skins also brought out a cooling top and pants that you use a spray with.
Couple of good cooling vests are

Re: Hydration tips?
Can't vouch for the truth of this but I bet it's close,
the article said that something like 80% of most people in the US are dehydrated
(space for jokes provided here....).
Hydrating the night before really works.
Each time I wake up at night I take a big drink from a large water bottle I keep nearby.
Always drink if it's hot, whether you are thirsty or not.
If you get thirsty, it's too late, you're dehydrated.
Sometimes I dissolve an electrolyte tablet in the water
like the bikers and marathoners use.
It tastes like c#&p but think
it works in a subtle way.
Hats with side and back flaps are good. Light weight long sleeved shirts that
soak up the sweat work to cool the upper body.
I literally saw someone get less than 100 meters from their car
and get so sun-struck they had to be helped back.
Granted it was over 110F but it can happen quickly when it happens.
Of course alcohol does wonders to help accelerate dehydrating the system
and I leave it to the experienced consumers to
figure out how much more water is needed to compensate.
A very important topic as most know...

Re: Hydration tips?
thanks for the comments guys
We get hydration beaten into us by the saftey guys here at work, and for good reason heat stroke takes quite a few guys down each summer, work doesent stop just because its a bit warm, about the only thing to shut us down are cyclones.
I have a camel pack but it would be lucky to be 1 L and within an hour its luke warm or empty, a 3 L insulated jobbie sounds the buisness would only need to top it up a couple of times during the day.
do they have a clip for your bungie?

Don't forget to throw some ice into them before heading out on a hot day Guys.

Re: Hydration tips?
A tip for the camel back bladders, freeze a small bottle of whole chocolate milk and slip it inside the bladder or next to an iced bladder. Nothing works better or faster to replace lost electrolytes.

Thats the one i just bought. it has chest strap and a few pockets on the back for a spare coil, first aid, or lunch.
Still have to wear a belt for your pick holder though.

Re: Hydration tips?
We all know how good that first Beer or cold drink is when the weather is hot. Nothing washes the dust out of your throat quite like it.
Even though its refreshing, turns out that its not so good for you if your in the advance stages of dehydration.
The human body cant digest liquids that are either too hot or cold. Our bodies will hold the liquid in our stomach until it has warmed to body temperature, before passing it into our intestines.
I was looking at the 3ltr camelbaks and reckon a GPX battery pouch wouldnt be too hard to stitch to the bottom.

Re: Hydration tips?
Hey F M,
It could be a real money spinner for a enterprizing individual. I reckon it would have to have the belt included to secure it from flopping around, and a small pocket on the back for keys/phone/GPS/snacks or whatever would be great.
While we are on the subject, has anyone had problems with the bottom belt on the GPX battery harness twisting up after alot of use I reckon they should have used heavier grade belt to avoid this......

Re: Hydration tips?
Put me down for one mate
IMHO the existing harness is a bit average it carries a battery has a D for your bungie and thats it.
the one im after needs to be able to do everything the existing harness does + be able to take a 3l insulated bladder + incorperating a decent belt/strap that can take a hipstick and finally room for some basic gear i.e. PLB, GPS, etc
