Is there gold in Eastern Victoria?
Hi guys
I would love to get into gold prospecting but have no idea where to start. I am wondering what areas in Victoria have gold? I am wondering if there is gold around Marysville, Mt Baw Baw, Gembrook etc (Eastern Victoria) ??

Hi Heidii,
There was gold found in Eastern Victoria..places like Walhalla , Woods Point , Omeo , Jericho , Bruthen , Mitta Mitta, Bright and Dargo..plus lots of other places including Gembrook..many places will be off limits these days so go here first... http://new.dpi.vic.gov.au/earth-resources/fossicking/prospecting-guide and give them a call about any areas you want to prospect in.

Re: Is there gold in Eastern Victoria?
Hi Heidii<
Sorry don't know much but found few things on google which might interest you:
http://www.dpcd.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/44589/Tanjil.pdf
The area was first explored in 1860 by botanist Ferdinand von Mueller. The area was settled in the 1880s and 1890s, after the discovery of gold in the area. Baw Baw National Park was declared in April 1979. On 7 November 2008 the park was added to the Australian National Heritage List as one of eleven areas constituting the Australian Alps National Parks and Reserves.[1]
Marysville:
Due to its scenic and peaceful location, Marysville has long been a popular holiday retreat for visitors, especially during the spectacular springtime blooming season and the colourful autumn period. Its history dates back to the mid-1800s when gold was discovered in the area, however it wasn't long before guest houses were established and the town became a favourite for honeymooners due to its tranquil setting amongst native bush and waterfalls.
Do a little bit of search on google and you might find some good info.
Try to find some old articles here:

Re: Is there gold in Eastern Victoria?
When I was living in Melbourne and before I started prospecting, I used to spend a lot of time in the bush around Marysville, Toolangi, Big River and Black range. I can tell you that the plants and terrain in most of those places are similar to what I have seen in Creswick State forest. The Murrindindi River, in Toolangi, had a truck load of 'Fools Gold' in it that had my friends and I fooled for a while, before we learnt the "Thumbnail test". It looked like tinsel at Christmas on a summers day. It could very well be worth a look and you have sparked my curiosity towards the area. I imagine that it would be no where as rich as the Golden Triangle, but still alot closer for you than the goldfields.
Let us know how you go.

Re: Is there gold in Eastern Victoria?
Plenty of goldfields in the east. Not as rich, not as accessible, and the ground is mush steeper.
But i knows of people who do well detecting east of melbourne. Also worth a trip if you like looking for gems.
But i would wait till summer

Re: Is there gold in Eastern Victoria?
I have a copy of Prospector's Guide 1970 by Dept. of Mines Victoria. You should try and get a copy. In the back there is a small map of the Mineral Deposits of Victoria. I can try scanning it and you can try enlarging it. PM me with your e-mail addy if you want a copy. I was interested in the Bendoc area and I think I have some other maps but I would have to look for them. I never got down to the Bendoc area.

Re: Is there gold in Eastern Victoria?
Hi Steve, do you have a copy of Mining History of Gold Deposits of the Far South Coast of NSW , dept. of Mines 1973 , Bulletin 24 ? It gives info. and maps of all the old gold mines around Eden. Another one is Bulletin 23, Tumbarumba Gold Field. A lot of the old timers had to leave good stone as there was no treatment plant, near by. I think you will still be able to get these from the Dept. of Mineral Resources. They will just print them out and put a plastic spine on to hold the pages together. I paid $3.00 and $2.50 for mine a few years ago.......
