Hey everyone,

Well as I'm still getting in the swing of things so to speak. I haven't got a big load of nuggets under my belt yet, but slowly getting there. But thought I would put the question out there as to how often have any of you found gold on the road? It pops up after I got a little .1 out on a road on sunday. The area looked good and there was a good bit of Quartz exposed on the track right where I parked. I give it a thorough going over with the 8" and 4 inches down out popped a nugget. I couldn't believe it! A couple of swear words were spoken at the time and I spent the next hour and a half walking with no further results. I had moved my car in the meantime and when I was driving back another detectorist had his cruiser parked nearly on top of where I had got it out. I just had a chuckle to myself and kept on going..Smile

Cheers,
Paul

hi Paul

conrats on finding the nugget, gold is were you find it lol

i once found gold next to a well used track near coolgardie
i detected a small quarts blow about 30mtrs off the track and found the first of a 27 bit patch
2 of these were 1mtr to the side of the track and one was dug right on the wheel tracks
and found a couple more bits 10 mtrs of to the other side
and this was a well trodden track that lots of people would have drove past

just goes to show you dont have to go serious bush to find the yellow stuff

no worries someday

i hear what you are saying
i do fill all holes no matter how small (or large if im lucky)and leave any patch as i found it
and if your on a patch and get a signal on a bush track then how many of us would walk past and not dig it?
you have just got to be responsible about it and back fill properly,
any cocky would be rightly upset to see big detector holes on a track and the first person he shouts at is the one who name is on the section 20a that is me who is trying to do the right thing.

Interesting silwane..
The main roads in townships in the Golden Triangle in Victoria were formed at the very start of the goldrush and most weren't dug for gold. Recently a local historian shook his head and suggested that what lays under our (now bitumen) goldtown roads may well hold the best gold of what remains in the area. Same goes for gravel tracks as you found I'd guess.

And don't I hate it every time I see a gold deposit area being excavated for a new house around here... No with all the soil being dumped at the tip as 'clean fill'. Evil or Very Mad

Out at a little patch i was on "right next to a dirt road" hill slopped down to the road i thought to myself i bet everyone that's been here has never bothered checking the road.
did a little bit of a scan and was surprised to find 4 little bits on the road.

I focused on where the wash ways had broken through onto the road creating a man-made alluvial plane i suppose you could say Smile

Take the good with the bad though i also found little fragments of steel from cars all over the show.

hi ya stoppsy

have you heard anything about a bloke that lives in your home town going to work recently and stopped to have a leak about 10 ks from town
and pick up a good nugget?

i have heard two versions one said the nugget was 15oz the other said it was 35oz but both versions said he does not detect, he just looked
down when relieving himself and specked it on the ground right next to the road.

have you heard about this?
cheers
i have heard something about it but not much. i know a lot off people now when they pull over they are checking the grounds for a flash off yeallow...i might just start checking the road sides i think...

fencejumper, why query a good story you heard? I'd go with the 35oz version that he just picked it up off the roadside near St Arnaud whilst taking a leak quite recently. Doesn't really matter to some folk here if it was 30 yrs ago, near Kalgoorlie and was 2oz. A good story is a good story. Some members like to state as fact that these tales were recent, big, absolutely true, and anyone like me who asks questions gets shot down. Twisted Evil Very Happy

Now where is that *sarcastic icon* you asked about earlier when replying to something I said on another thread? Razz

Thank you someday. I'm going to stop drinking tea right now. I've heard caffeine can make you state facts instead of being subservient. Your advice is always (except the times when you're blatantly wrong) sound. Very Happy

Really? Let's try looking at the last post that you 'shot down' a 53yo lady. That's me, by the way.

OMG now i feel bad," No I don't ". For sure the forum is all about how to and all the bits related to finding gold! Along the way there will always be posts that we don't agree with, from one person to another we will and rightfully so agree to disagree! How we perceive these comments and the way we follow up with a reply or no reply makes us human!
I totally understand the forums top guys to cut or delete an offensive post, but when a person is only out for there own glory then reason needs to be considered which may offend some, yet in reality are for the good of all!
Marigold will be back, Guarantee it, but with a different user name!

I couldn't agree more Someday. Of course everyone from time to time disagrees with something that someone had said etc, and they are within their rights to question or defend themselves. but........ some people just seem to love stirring the apple cart and tend to harp on and on and on......... It was not just this thread either, there were many. I for one just got a little tired of hearing it.
Happy hunting

Getting back to the main topic /gold on roads. The wedderburn council have removed wash and put it on the streets at different times. You may remember a newspaper report that mentions a man finding an Oz. or more piece on a street in Wedderburn. It gets mentioned every now and again in Gem and treasure. Some of you may remember about 6 years ago all the gold that was found on site at the wedderburn token hunt. When they formed the fake puddler and put the dam in, a truckload of wash was left around a tree next to the puddler to similate the real thing. The organisers were charging the kids for a bag of dirt ,prepacked and if they panned a steel washer from it then they were in the raffle for a chance to win a real gold nugget. After a while they ran out of bags and the kids started to pan the heap that was beside the puddler dam. I seen gold up to 2 0r 3 grams come out of it.When we looked into where the load of dirt had come from it turned out that it was removed from Queens gully in the early 1980's when the puddler was installed. I was back a short time later but the dirt had been removed or spread out. This dirt came from the same place the roads board was getting their gravell from.Just as a matter of interest,Fencejumpers daughter is a very keen panner and may have been one of the kids at the time who was working the heap.
