Broken Wire in a Coil Empty Broken Wire in a Coil

Post  echidnadigger Tue Mar 03, 2009 12:44 am

Ive got a commander 250mm elliptical coil that died a while back. I peeled open the plug and found a broken wire. I soldered the little bugger back on and it still didn't work.
Last weekend I dropped into coiltek in maryborough and much to their credit they had a young bloke there that did his best to fix it.
We had a situation that had all of us scratching our heads. When the wiring was checked it turned out that the DD coil was from factory wired as a mono. Hence the nice young bloke re-wired it back to DD specs. The coil failed again. Jokingly I said: Put it back the way it was, as it has paid for itself many times over.
That's exactly what this nice fella did next. It still failed. While they were nice enough to not accept money for their effort.
Can anyone shed light on this little dilemma as I would love to get this little coil up and running again.

G'day Brett,
Have you got access to a fairly decent multimeter?
If you had a break in the plug, there's a pretty good chance there'll be another an inch or two below the plug, where it bends into the control box.

The multimeter will tell you so. Compare the readings with one of your other coils. If you've not got a multimeter, then a small torch battery and light bulb will tell you if there's a break, just include one of the windings in series. The mono usually has 4 ground pins and an active, whereas the DD has 3 grounds and two separate actives. Looking at how the plug is wired will give you a clue as the grounds are usually tied together there.

When all hooked up, wiggle the plug and see if you get a spike of continuity, the point in the cable where this happens is likely the area of the break, means shortening the cable a bit though.

I’ll see if I can dig up the pinouts, it’s around here somewhere.

Cheers

G'day Brett,
I found it, you can download it here;
Plug wiring (pdf)
Go by this and not what I said above about grounds and actives as this was wrong....another detector.
I guess you've already done this but just in case, check the the brass sockets inside the front of the connector to make sure they've not splayed out too much.

Cheers
Grey
