weight measures.
Hi All.
Could someone please take the time to advise those of us that don't know.
what are : troy ounces
: how many grams to an ounce;
: what are penny weight's
So at least when I read about gold being found I can then imagine the size.
Thanks Greg.

Troy weights
Hi Greg,
if ANYTHING is up 'my alley' it's this!!!! Here we go:
TROY weighing scale:
Grain = .065gm
24 Grains to a Pennyweight = 1.56gm
20 Pennyweights to a Troy ounce = 31.1gms
12 Troy ounces to a Troy Pound = 373.24gms
32.15 Troy ounces = 1 kilo of GOLD....be nice wouldn't it!
Hope this clears it up! Remember, all 'ounce' measurements for gold & silver are all
in TROY ounces, NOT standard Av (avordupois) or imperial ounces. Every time you
see the gold price quoted, its for a Troy ounce.
Cheers, Dwt

Re: weight measures.
Hey Greg re imagining the size of nuggets relative to troy ounces..... I found a piece yesterday that was the same size as a piece of confetti (flat as paper, 4mm diameter disc), it weighed 0.1 gram (1/10 of one gram). I said "how pathetic is this piece", my mate said "thats $5 worth there".
A piece as big as 2 five cent pieces stacked on top of each other will weigh 8 grams...thats AUD$380 worth.
A weet bix sized piece is 20 ounces.
Even finding little bits it adds up fast.

Re: weight measures.
Gooday All.
Thanks Guys. that makes it easier. Hey tributer you are right that small pieces add up, a friend of mine came to the beach with me one day after a school sports day on the beach & I let him use my detector & he got heaps of signals & I told him that they were 5c. pieces & he didn't want to stop for them but at the end of the arvo we had about $25. mostly in 5c. 10c. & 20c. pieces I think there was only $7. in gold coins. so it pays to dig them all. but he reckons you will find more if you don't dig anything under 20c. as you will cover more distance.
Greg.

Re: weight measures.
Something worth noting is that anything to do with minerals is weighed only in Troy Ounces.
One Pennyweight (dwt) is exactly 1.555g ... or: 1/20th of an Ounce. (a Troy Ounce of course!).
I keep a 1.55g nugget on me to test and compare detectors and their coils for responsiveness.
Cheers,
Marco
