my next coil should be
hi all if I can I would like to pick your brains about my next coil to use in the spinafix country of the halls creek area in the Kimberley.
coils that i have.
originally had a 18x12 g/s mono but it was to touch sensitive. sold on ebay $1500 crazy but probably finding gold in sudan.
now I have
g/s 17x11 ddpro haven’t realy used it
nugget finder advantage
14x9 favourite have found most of my gold with it.
16 inch round has found a bit
25 inch round have not really been able to a fair go as always too much interference for the 4500,
With the 5000 the heat and storms in November the same.
And last attempt in Feb. with the 5000 could not even get it usable with 14x9.
But weather is due to change soon so I am looking for another mono coil.
but witch one
17x11
24x12
30x7
Your suggestions please
A bit of Kimberley gold
first trip with 5000 late november
cant seem to get photo to work

Re: my next coil should be
You have it covered already but a second backup of your most used coil would be handy.

which new coil
gday, from what your saying, you have plenty of medium to Large coils. So may I suggest a small round mono to clean up on the small bits and to get you into those tight to reach spots. Minelabs 8" or the 6" coiltek would be ideal for this purpose. Also when the emi's a problem, sometimes switching to a smaller coil can help. Cheers evan

Re: my next coil should be
thanks evan for the feed back.
never realy concidered a tiny coil apart from when digging deep holes and trying to be sure nugget is still in centere of hole to use as a pinpointer.
i carry a fullsize crowbar on the wagon and love having to drop it all and walk back for the bar and posthole shovel.
1 have picked up bits down to .2 and smaller with 14x9 is there a big difference in what a small coil can docompaired to the 14x9.
its a bit hard to emagain how slow it would be to cover a aera.
i was looking for a coil to help me find a new aera but very open to sigestions
thanks pete

Re: my next coil should be
Gday Pete
Having worked spinifex country myself I know how hard it can be at times to swing the coil, its ok once your on to it and clear away the spinifex, but its snagging a piece or two in the same spot amoungst the clumps that alerts you to the fact that you might be on to a patch or a bit of a run.
I have found that the 8" minelab mono and the 11" minelab commander mono are both good for this job, you can get them both in low to the ground and into all the nooks and crannies, this gives you a better chance of finding an indicator than using a big coil and having to swing it over the spinifex clumps, there is also a new nuggetfinder 8x6 mono out now (one on ebay at the moment $240 buy it now) I have not seen one or used it as yet, but the shape suggests a very responsive coil.
I have the 30x7 nuggetfinder patch pro coil but have only briefly used it, but its not a coil for areas of spinifex and unless you have some open areas that you are planning on hitting then I wouldnt recommend it as you would find it difficult to use, there is also a nuggetfinder 12" advantage mono coil thats easily as sensitive as your 14x9 nf advantage but I would hazard a guess at it would have equal to possibly a bit more depth being a round coil.
Having tried out the nf 12" advantage mono I would still have to say that I prefer the 11" minelab commander mono, its not quite as sensitive to ground noises and hotrocks etc, but it runs more quietly during the late part of the day when you experience the worst emi, and its a very capable coil with good depth ability on all sized targets, having also had the 14x9 advantage mono I often opted to use the minelab 11" commander mono in preference to it, as you simply dont get as many iffy ground noises, warbles and hotrocks so you are not digging and scratching about as much just getting on with looking for real targets.
cheers

Re: my next coil should be
Hi sayyer
Thanks for the feedback.
I also have the minelab 11 inch it found me my first patch.
But I personally prefer the 14x9 as it’s easier to poke into places.
I have taken on board what you have said about small coils above and in your other posts.
Can you please if possible explain the difference on a target between the 14x9 and 8x6 in your opinion?
There are a few rocky areas and small gullies that are worth going over with a small coil checking out.
After thinking about it a bit I can see the 8x6 being a coil I will use a fair bit should be even good to shove into the Spinifex clumps as well.
So it looks like I will a
Have to get 2 coils as the 8x6 is a must
There are also open areas to cover as in old workings .graded, pushed and burnt places. To search
My first thought is 17x11 as I think it will become my new faveriot but as it’s close to 14x9
Feel I should go for something different 24x12 or 30x7.
sayyer the 30x7 has me curious as only 7 inches wide that’s a long skinny nose sounds like it may also be good for poking in through and around Spinifex as well as open areas. Or it not really sensitive enough for small pieces. Or depth as it’s so skinny.
Cheers Pete

Re: my next coil should be
Hi Pete,
I'll be heading to WA soonly & have been thinking about a coil for patch hunting. The 30 NF patch hunting coil was one I was giving some serious thought but being only 7" wide it would lack in depth too much. So it will be either a 24" Elip NF or coiltek. I hope to be test driving the coiltek one shortly, it has the advantage of being 14" wide opposed to 12" of the NF. This should give a better depth response. When patch hunting you need to cover ground quickly so 24" over the 17". I've never detected up you way & by the sounds of it the EM's are a major problem. So if you think the 24" Elip would be fine during the dry, I'd recomend it for patch hunting and then change to round mono's to clean up! For this I use a 16 & 12 NF & my mate has the 25. If your priority is to find patches I'd question the time spent using the tiny coils mopping up when the time could be better spent chasing new ground. Just my way of thinking!

Re: my next coil should be
Thanks for all the advice
Could not make a decision so gone for all 3 the 24, 17 and 8 elpts.
Figured if I don’t like any I can resell for a small loss.
Thanks Pete

Re: my next coil should be
Gday Pete
I have had and used the nuggetfinder advantage 14x9 eliptical mono, and personally found it a bit twitchy for my liking, a bit prone to hot rocks and odd ground noises, and I always ended up putting my 11" commander mono back on, later I sold the 14x9 and replaced it with a 14" round advantage mono which I really do like and now use it a lot for general detecting.
As far as the difference in the 14x9 and the 8x6 goes I can only really comment generally as I have not used the 8x6 as yet, the 14x9 is a very sensitive coil and is pretty sharp on small pieces and particularly specimen nuggets, I have seen some nice nuggets found at good depths with them as well so they are a pretty good general purpose coil if you want something light weight and sensitive and that also has respectable depth.
I can see the 8x6 being a really popular coil, I have not used one but have since had a look at one the other day, the first thing is the shape suggests that it would have a tight signal field, looks as though it is pretty tough too so it would be good for shoving about in the spinifex or manouvering about in rocky areas, I am undecided about the cable coming out of the coil case under the shaft though, they have obviously done this for a reason but not having used one the reason is not apparent to me as yet, someone suggested that it may be so that there is not an offset area of sensitivity.
The 30x7 patchfinder will be a really hard coil to use in areas with spinifex, its real strength is in its sweep from side to side, obviously for maximum ground coverage, its also very sensitive so it will pick up small pieces that may alert you to a patch or run, as you are basically looking for indicators that will pull you up and let you know that theres gold there, but wide open and flat areas are where its strengths will be of most use, generally its an awkward coil to use on rubbly ground and where there is any clumpy vegetation as you have to continually lift it up and down, and re level it if it hits something during the sweep, also being long and thin it is best used in conjunction with a hipstick, you may also find this restrictive using it in the spinifex.
For general purpose detecting I still prefer a 14" nf advantage mono, working variable areas with a small amount of vegetation or some light rubble, good depth and sensitivity and reasonable ground coverage, but thats my personal preference, when I want to detect more open areas that appear deep and loamy I use the nf 18" round advantage mono, always seem to get better depth with the round coils but if you want ground coverage and also respectable depth then a 24x12 eliptical mono will be of more use to you.
Emi is an issue with the big coils and as the day wears on the bigger the coil the bigger the issue, the best time to use them is in the quiet of the morning and up until say about 11 ish, after that I go down to the 14" and then to the 11" if its still bad, one thing I also found with the 30x7 patchfinder is that it does not seem so sensitve to emi either so thats a good thing meaning that you could patch hunt for most of the day with it unlike some of the other big coils.
cheers
