Re: what to buy
G'day Danny, my advice would be to get the latest model detector that you can afford, so in this case of the two that you have mentioned the extreme would be the go.

what to buy
Thanks for the suggestions it sounds pretty clear what would be the better of the two is there any reason for this or is it because it is a newer machine thanks again Danny

The Extreme is a later Model..
The Minelab GP extreme detector was released in November 2000 and is no longer in production. The GP extreme was a gold detector utilising Pulse Induction, MPS and DVT technology.

Re: what to buy
the extreme is years more advanced than the 2000. i don`t know much about modded machines other than what i have read, apparently some modded machines perform worse after modding and if you needed repairs minelab wont touch a modded machine

Re: what to buy
Hi Dannyvic
Heres my 2 cents worth.
I asked my mate in the Triangle the same question as you, if I cant afford a GPX4500 what would be the next best detector. This guy has been detecting for more than 30 years and knows his stuff and has used just about every Minelab thats come out and without a hesitation said "SD2000". I asked why and he said the SD2000 was the most quietest and stable machine he's ever used ( before the GPX series ) even with a Mono on it while the Extreme was the exact opposite, the noisiest machine his ever used. He couldn't wait to trade it in when the 4000 came out and since has upgraded to a 4500. So you can see he did persevere with the Extreme and found gold with it but he regretted trading his SD2000 for it. I was lucky enough to take his SD2000 for a couple of runs 15 years ago and he wasn't lying when he said this machine was good.
I cant comment myself on the Extreme because I have never used one (ended up buying 4500) but on his experience and advice I would be buying the SD2000.
Here's some more interesting reading from Finders : http://www.finders.com.au/Finders_Archives/News/PR156.HTM
PS the SD2000 I used was standard not modded and it worked like a charm no need for mods, it found me gold both times shallow and deep.

Re: what to buy
hey danny, your probably got a $ amount in mind,go the later machine for the auto ground balancing, huge diff, if you can push out a couple hundred more look for a 3000, prices have really tumbled of late and without doubt each machine is better than the one before, phill

Re: what to buy
i met up with a few few fellow detectorists at the Canoona gold fields not too long ago. 2 of the 4 guys there were running 5000's, but had just traded from extreme's.
They said that all the gold they have found with their 5000 they would have found with their extreme.. The only difference between the 2 is that the 5000 runs incredably quiet and smooth.
I have an extreme and it loves mono coils, it runs really quiet with them... my machine is modded though, so i don't know if that makes any difference.

Re: what to buy
Good day All.
I have an extreme & it runs nice & quite but in some really hot ground you have to use a DD coil but if you had a couple of more $ I would go the 3000, you should pick one up cheap from a dealer as lots must have been traded on 5000's.
Cheers Greg
