Merriwa - NSW
Hi all,
Heading to Merriwa next week and thinking of trying my luck has anyone been out this way, I am new to this area having never been down that way before, I have access to a 4500 and will probably look at some panning as well any info on the area would be appreciated
Thanks

Mr Blackadder,
Looking at it on my maps it appears that there is not a gold mine past or present within a hundred miles of Merriwa. There is a good chance my information is lacking though !

Thanks Jig I figured that is why I might be struggling to find anything, but will still give it a go while I am there providing the rain clears

Re: Merriwa - NSW
Correction Jig just found a 1879 newspaper report Maitland Mercury States:
"Gold has been found by a prospecting party within six miles of Merriwa. The gold is of superior quality and high color, and was taken from a wash five feet deep. The country is of slate ' formation, and although gold has not been found in payable-: quantities, yet the proprietors expect that, being now on the lead, they will, from the appearance of present prospects, soon strike paytable and rich gold.. " http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/18938429?searchTerm=merriwa%20gold&searchLimits=
Further research may be needed

Re: Merriwa - NSW
Maybe they found some colour locally, but never found the source or enough for a commercial alluvial operation. Colour is enough for the likes of us though, so good hunting.

Re: Merriwa - NSW
This is enough to convince me to give it a go,"160 ounces of coarse gold was obtained from Neal and party's claim during the last ten days, and still continues to show gold." - The Maitland Mercury (1882) But as you said Jig any mention of color is enough to get any of us excited.
On reading full article they were talking about Biggera (confusing layout of the newspaper article) but will still give it a go on the earlier post

Re: Merriwa - NSW
Blackadder,
CassilisThis small village is around 43 kilometres West from Merriwa on the Golden Highway. The town was originally a thriving mining centre and the Cassilis Gold Mining Company in Powers Gully was the biggest working company until 1915. It wouldn't take long to pop up here for a day of detecting.

It is interesting that no historic mines are shown anywhere near Merriwa or Cassilis on this file http://www.4shared.com/file/iYPPkUrD/GoldMinesInNewSouthWales.html
I have lost a bit of faith in this info now.
