coil depth
Just out of curiosity, which coil do you think will punch deeper, an 11 inch mono commander or an 14x9 elite mono, Steve

Re: coil depth
This is going back a bit Steve, but on sheer depth alone & on targets over the ounce + mark, the round should go a little deeper, than the 14X9 inch elliptical mono. But in saying that, the almost similar (in diameter size) 14X9 elliptical mono, should give a slightly better, sharper, signal response over the gram to sub gram gold, than that of the 11 inch round mono.
It's been so long, I could be wrong altogether.

Re: coil depth
Thanks for your thoughts Kon, the thing i like most about the 14x9 is slightly better ground coverage. I might do some testing and see which one is the best all-rounder. Steve

Re: coil depth
The 11 inch mono has a perimeter of close to 31.102 inches.
The 14 x 9 mono has a perimeter of close to 36.5 inches.
Therefore given the same ground conditions and gb capability the 14 x 9 mono in theory should go deeper than the 11 inch mono by a very small amount.
The 11 inch may be a tad better on smaller nuggs below 0.5 g but I reckon it would be a close race.
Just an opinion, not gospel
Most of us old timers understand metal detector coils or at least have fair grasp of how they work and which is better for a particular task but here is a good general bit of coil info that will be of interest to those just starting out.

Re: coil depth
thanks for that Adrian, I had a funny feeling the depth may be a little better on the 14x9

Re: coil depth
Coil diameter is a prime aspect in how deep a particular coil might detect a certain size target, but there are a lot of other aspects that will determine how sensitive or how deep a coil may detect any given target.
Coil shape .
Winding style..Mono, concentric, Double D Mono
Winding length,
Number of turns,
Inductance,
Type of wire...Single strand copper, or multi strand (Litz)
Tight wound ore loose wound,
Neat wound or rough.
Internal Amp,
Housing material,
Shielding efficiency...To name a few.
