Tilley kerosene pressure lamp
Looking for some help locating spares for this lamp.
Tilley Kerosene Pressure Lamp.
Can't find any identification marks other than Tilley - Made in England.
Can remember as a kid this was the type of lighting we had on the farm. (No electricity)
Also remember sitting on the beach with it glowing while Dad had a line in the water.
Have given it a bit of a clean up and all I need to get it going is a "Double Tie Mantle."
Googled but can only find them in UK at exorbitant prices and postage.
Does anyone know who or where they may have them in Australia?

Re: Tilley kerosene pressure lamp
Back in the 80`s and 90`s we used these Tilly lamps, but if i remember correct they were the single tie ones. I had a Colman that was single tie also, it used Shellite for fuel, they didn`t need preheating with Metho like the Tilly Kero ones did. Iv`e got a mate that used to collect the Tilly`s, I`ll ring him tomorrow and see if he still has any of them, if he has and wants to part with the mantles I will let you know.
A little tip to save the mantle from breaking after use was to spray it with hair spray after it had cooled down.
I reckon we were the only blokes along the river that had a can of hair spray, until others discovered the trick. lol

Peter, try this mob: https://www.bristolandbathantiques.com.au/restoration-repair-service/
They sell Tilley lamp parts and may carry the mantles. I was there about three years ago and recall that they had quite a few Tilley and Aladdin lamps.
Scrubby, wish that I had known about the hairspray trick years ago when I was using a gas lamp for lighting.
No matter how carefully the lamp was packed, the mantle was always broken when I got to the camp site.
A lot of the time it would be dark, just when the lamp was most needed!

Re: Tilley kerosene pressure lamp
It`s called progress I suppose.
In my time camping beginning about 1948 this was what we used through the years.
The Carbide Lamp.
The Hurricane Lamp.
The Tilly lamp (pressure lamp).
The Colman Lamp (pressure lamp).
The LPG (gas lamp).
The LED Lamp and various led lights.
Other people may have used other type lamps , lets know.

Re: Tilley kerosene pressure lamp
Gday. What we used to do with a new mantle is burn them in . when new prime them up with say gas without lighting the turn off. Then light mantle and let burn out. Let cool then use as normal. Mantle would shrink but tough as. Last forever and put out better light than not burning in . hope this helps.

Big fella, I hear what you say, but little unclear, "prime them up with say gas without lighting the turn off?"
Can you please explain again?

Re: Tilley kerosene pressure lamp
Gday. Better clear that. With a gas one. Turn the gas on to fill mantle then turn off. Light the gas that's in mantle and let burn out and cool. Then use as normal . will probably work same with kero

Re: Tilley kerosene pressure lamp
Thanks for the help fellas, will have to remember the hairspray Scrubby.
Had to visit Bunnings today and thought while I was there I'd grab a bottle of Metho, run out of plonk at the bottleo (Just joking) to fire up the Tilley.
Nope they've sold out, apparently people are using it for disinfectant?

Re: Tilley kerosene pressure lamp
Thank you God's Money, buy Australian. Will check with them to see if they are interchangeable with Tilley lamps.
Re: Tilley kerosene pressure lamp
I remember using those lamps back in the 60s and 70s, I used to take them out rabbit trapping, they are brilliant lamps
