How Many Detectors Do You Have?
How many detectors do you own?
I have 21 at last count and used 3 frequently.....Have not been out for a while now.
The Infinium for beach and gold detecting.
The Safari for Beach work in the dry to damp sand.
The Sov XS for all types of detecting.
I can add the Gold Bug Pro as a fourth. Real nice little machine
The TDI, Sand Shark, Infinium and 2300 are starting to collect dust.

Re: How Many Detectors Do You Have?
I have owned 58 different detectors since 1960. All but two were second hand. One, the first metal detector that I ever used was a ww2 mine detector in the Wedderburn gold fields in 1960 to early63. Three were new from China and none of those worked well enough to bother keeping them. I have built 4 myself A BFO, A VLF and two PIs one of which (the BFO) ended up being tossed off a cliff into a gorge. I still have the two PIs and sold the 4th.
Yes you can only use one at a time aye. My absolute tried and true fav was the GS 15000, not because it was a brilliant detector (it isn't but it is not bad either) but because it felt like it was part of me when using it and it returned excellent results in and out of the gold fields. Plus it located my lost wedding ring that I lost in Twofold Bay out in waist deep water. Went back at 3 am low tide and pinged it first try....Lucky me coz the missus was a tad angry and when Filipinos get mad the sh..t really flies.

Re: How Many Detectors Do You Have?
Some years ago I was given an absolute mint condition GS 15000 which I still have.
But I don't think I would trust it in waist deep water however.

Re: How Many Detectors Do You Have?
Probably a good idea, but I had no choice. Low tide was about knee deep. It still works perfectly today after 33 years.
I purchased it from Miners Den in Mitcham Vic in 1986. for 894 dollars Not cheap by any standards of the time.
It was shipped from Minelab. to Miners den and from there to me. In total I paid 900 dollars.

Re: How Many Detectors Do You Have?
I reckon you might have paid more for those tectas than what I paid for my 58. ....I should do a recount, might be more than 58.
Will try and recall them and bung up a list later.
I was in the RAAF most of that time and didn't have much to spend my enormous RAAF wages on.
I left in 91 and was out of work for quite a while until I fired up my own watch n clock repair service plus obtained my Gemmology diploma, which has continued until about a week ago when my jewellers shut up shop because of the corona virus restrictions on retail outlets and public travel restrictions. Now I am twiddling my thumbs until all of this virus garbage blows over.
Am having a bit of fun playing with my old tectas, cleaning them up a bit and giving them a run at Pine Island now and again and bringing back a few memories.

Re: How Many Detectors Do You Have?
Well there you go, 40 years of detecting and I didn't know who invented the first one. Can't even begin to imagine how much gold would have been uncovered if he had followed up with his invention?
In 1881, Alexander Graham Bell invented the first metal detector.
As President James Garfield lay dying from an assassin's bullet, Bell hurriedly invented a crude metal detector in an unsuccessful attempt to locate the fatal slug.
Bell's metal detector was an electromagnetic device he called the induction balance.

Re: How Many Detectors Do You Have?
G’day Peter,
I have read the same story and the reason why it failed was they didn’t allow for the metal springs in the mattress. Hence they couldn’t locate the bullet.
Cheers.
Mike.

Re: How Many Detectors Do You Have?
As well as the detectors above, years ago ( Aka the Minelab 2100) I purchased Minelab's original Pin pointer for $189, what a waste of money for Gold Prospecting. At the time of using the 2100, I also had the control box for the Minelab 1600 on my hip and a small 6 inch coil for pin pointing in deep holes took the Pin Pointer in lieu of the 16000 to Vic one weekend. Never again
Ended up selling this pin pointer to a person who wanted a detector to show up nails in 3rd hand Railway sleepers prior to cutting with a saw, she rocked up with an 8x5 trailer and 2 sleepers for me to test the Pin Pointer out luckily it did the job.
My Current Pinpoint the Model 15 was thrown in when I purchased the Nox 800, thats when I sold the used once $189 PP.

Re: How Many Detectors Do You Have?
Looks like most of us have worked through some fairly decent detectors aye.
I have just been playing with the 15000 and it finds everything that my Gold Bug Pro can find and that is my most sensitive detector.
The only real difference being that the 15000 does not go quite as deep as the Bug. The 15 handles tough ground better than the Bug.
I never got round to putting an enhancer on the gold seeker but I reckon it would benefit quite well.

What a great collection!
I remember when the wall at the old Miners Den store in Melbourne used to be like that..all the old second hand Garretts,Whites and Minelabs hangin' there
That was a great shop for a browse around, before they went all up market and fancy and moved up the road

All mine but they all came from detector shops except 2 that was kits which had to be assembled +4 more kits/coils not completed yet.
There are another 36 of later model detectors left someplace else in this building.

Re: How Many Detectors Do You Have?
Sounds a bit like me Ivanll.
I find it difficult to part with them.
Decided to upgrade the battery pack in the Midas 500 today... Well that was fun. The original NiCad x 12 AAs (30 years old approx) was stuck to the cct board with silastic and to the inside of the bottom of the control box and was definitely not intended to be replaced. Anyway I made up a NiMh set and finally managed to fit them in place without the need for an entire tube of silastic. Is on charge now and coming up nicely....After discovering one shorted battery. Surprising how hot the bugger got.

Re: How Many Detectors Do You Have?
Just fired the Midas up and man o man I had forgotten how good this machine is.
Utterly kills my Gold bug and 2300 on small gold chains. Where the Bug gives a good response on one particular gold chain, the Midas blows my eardrums out on the same chain and at at least 2 to 3 times the depth. Using a gold bug 5 x 10 DD coil. The Midas also uses the older minelab DDs. I have not tried any of the later GPX coils. Yet. Also noticed that the EMI in my back yard that is fairly nasty does not seem to phase the Midas at all?
Anyhoo I am so happy that the machine is still in perfect working order.....And the new battery pack I made did not explode.

One and one wife.
Started with a 4000 back when.
Then upgraded to a 4500.
Upgraded to a 5000 the day they were released.
Downgraded to a 4000 again as wifey will only us them.
Sold up and retired from detecting 3.5 years ago.
Back into it again with one 4000 going rusty at the moment.
We can walk across the road and detect on a goldfield but we won't break the curfew.
