Why would some prefer 4500 over 5000?
I have read some posts in various forums where detectorists preferred the 4500 over the 5000. There was some mention of audio ability, but otherwise I'm not really sure why this would be. This remains a mystery to me so this is why I'm asking as I haven't used either, just the 4000 and previous models.
Given the option I would go with a 5000 myself (for WA), sounds like the fine gold timing is important, most of the posts comparing the two indicate go with the 5000 (price withstanding), I just want to cover all angles.

Good question Shinegold I would like to buy my son a GPX series detector, the price of the 4500 is good but it seems the fine gold setting of the 5000 is alot better. So it may all come down to dollars

Has anyone compared these two in WA? (I've seen a few clips on youtube, they seem similar but it's hard to tell, every clip they're running it too noisy!)

WHY WOULD SOME PREFER 4500 OVER 5000
I HAVE USED 4500 FOR 2 YEARS, PREVIOUSLY HIRED 5000. THE ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE IS ACHIEVED THROUGH STABLE AND QUIET SETTINGS. IT IS EASY TO GET CONSUMED BY THESE BUT ESSENTIALLY QUIETNESS OVERRIDES. WHEN;) ALL IS CONSIDERED, THERE IS NOT A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM. THE COILS CARRY THE MOST VARIATION AND TO COMPARE, THE SAME COILS MUST BE USED. FUNDAMENTALLY, GOOD DETECTING IS THE KEY, EVEN IF USING A 2100.

Re: Why would some prefer 4500 over 5000?
G'day gents
Reasons on preference between one model PI over the other (such that of preferring to keep/use a standard well tuned GPX 4500, over that of the same in GPX 5000), can vary between user, such that of sentimental reasons for one (have found more gold with one over that of the other, or the 4500 is to close to the workings of the 5000 to warrant the extra dollars for a newer model etc, etc), but the fact remains, that each new model Minelab PI introduced, has had some minor/major improvements/enhancements incorporated within their electronics, for the better recovery of gold, regardless of the type of coils made to suit.
Of course a very experienced/knowledgeable detectorist, will (most of the time) have the upper hand at locating gold with a much older model/version of a detector, than a complete newbie swinging a GPZ 7000, with little or no knowledge over the type of ground they intend swinging on, or having little or no knowledge on the operational workings of their detector, (timings/settings etc.)
Less one is prospecting over completely untouched gold producing virgin ground (where even the SD2000 will go well at locating gold within reach), the newest model detector designed for the prospecting of gold nuggets, will certainly give a complete newbie, a far better advantage at finding/locating gold these days/times, over that of using an older model detector, but will also greatly increase the finds of an experienced metal detectorist.
Cheers Kon.
