Norseman WA
Hey all,
has anybody here done much detecting around Norseman in WA? Since the south of WA seems to be a lot cooler than the north I'm thinking about starting there next month and then work my way up a few weeks later. There doesn't seem to be much information about detecting in the Norseman area although it used to be rich back in the days.

Re: Norseman WA
I think the gold south of Perth is fine gold in rock.
Newmont Boddington mine as example - 1.5 south of Perth - lots of gold, no nuggets
I am sure there is a little alluvial gold, not sure how much.
A little more east of Norseman maybe

Looks like you're right about the reef gold. I still don't understand why there doesn't seem to be much detecting activity in that area. I've been detecting reef areas in QLD for the last few years so maybe I'll just give it a go.

I have heard of some good gold found there, had a quick look myself but most of us Easterner are in too much of a hurry to get north of Kal. As for WA people there are better location closer to Perth.

Hi Krissy,
I have spent quite a bit of time detecting north of Norseman to Widgemooltha and Larkinville (home of the Golden Eagle).
I stayed at the Widgey' pub c'van park a few months back.....met a guy there who had just purchased a Garratt Groundhog from a visitor to the park.....he didn't know anything about 'tectors (or so he reckoned)......he showed me 3 bits he found.
Years ago I met a retired farmer who sold his farm to finance drilling for gold on his lease where the Eagle had been found........he went broke!
However he showed me a hole nearby that was about 5 metres deep where he witnessed gold clinging to quartz being pulled out with a backhoe.....
5,000 ounces total.......
Incidently, I met a Kiwi there one time....I think he said he was a possum hunter in NZ and came over here in winter prospecting ( slept under the tarp on his ute in the bloody freezing cold.....one morning I cooked him a t-bone steak....which he relished !).I heard he had a very successful season in the Eastern goldfields.
BTW......The biggest bit I found was 1 oz (a few ks south of Widgie.).
Be lucky,
