Re: gold inside clay lumps
Not uncommon for gold to be in clay. Especially fines and sluice gold. Can be a pain to remove from the clay so that was why puddlers were invented.

Re: gold inside clay lumps
Not uncommon at all Tim. As a matter of fact, 90% of all gold found by detectorists is found sitting on, or in clay.
Cheers Kon.

photo of the clay lumps
these are the clay lumps they are pretty big ones the size of a mini footy and the other is a size of a sherrin afl footy both have quartz bit coming out of it and both especially the larger one are both giving off a noticeable loud signal I have the gpx4500 in cancel in enhance too and using a 15 inch evo spoked coil I have to use cancel as I live in inner city Melbourne and the emi is emense cancel was the only way of checking.
Ill like it if anyone who you know do xrf testing on large items such as what I have they are pretty lumpy of course its not all what I hope is gold but its hard compacted clay lumps please help me out thanks tim yellowmellow here are the photo

Re: gold inside clay lumps
Smash them up, sieve the crushed material, check it for lumps of gold or other metal, and then pan all the fine material, and you will have your answer,, this is what everyone else does to find out what is in there.

Re: gold inside clay lumps
Tim smash them up into smaller sizes and then wave each piece over your coil. This will tell you which one has the target in it. Then smash that one down until you reach the target, hoping it's gold.

Re: gold inside clay lumps
Tim, put them one at a time in a solid plastic bucket and use a bit of 4x4 timber and give them a pounding up and down. If it is only clay they will be broken on 1 wack. It will not hurt or damage the gold and then you gram a handful at a time and pass over the coil. No different to out bush.
Smash them Tim.. You will not loose your gold if it is gold in the clay.
Hope it is gold and not junk.
We are waiting Tim

Tim wrap them up in an old cloth, a towel or blanket. they will do the job just as good as a potatoe sack.yellowmellow wrote:thanks but I don't want to make a mess does anyone know where I can buy some potato hessin bags I feel this will be right also a good hammer too the bag is better then after its crushed up Ill carefully empty the contents into a bucket then use a sieve into another bucket I don't want to use water and panning it that's too messy thanks tim

Re: gold inside clay lumps
You seem to not want to break up the clay??
It is not worth a brass razoo if you don't know if it contains gold.
So your choices are.
1 Dolly it up and pan it off.
2 Get an XRF test done. This will only detect gold very close to the surface.
3 Get a Scorpion gold stinger. This tecta has a TR disc mode that is calibrated to id the metal content of individual rocks.
4 Rotate the rock slowly over the coil of your detector and find out if the target signal is coming from a particular isolated .area of the rock.
5. Dolly it up and pan it off.
6 Oh yeah I almost forgot... Dolly it up and pan it off.

Common tim, your next response will be to tell us what you found. Gold or junk.
Hope it is yellow.

Re: gold inside clay lumps
what I'm doing is keeping them in a tub of water so it can dissolve and when its totally sooked I'm going to get me hands dirty and weed out the lumps and hopefully find a bit of gold nice 1 tim

Re: gold inside clay lumps
I think that you don't have much confidence that it's gold, otherwise you would have already investigated, clay is not as difficult as quartz to break, I usually do that straight in the bush....

Re: gold inside clay lumps
Tim I'm not trying to be rude mate. But you asked us all for advice about these clay balls and we've told you what to do. And non of us had ever advised you to soak them in water. If you had planned to do that in the first place then why ask??? The way we have all told you is the best and quickest way of doing it. Just smash them up and then wave your detector over them.

Re: gold inside clay lumps
Tim my method is if I can't see gold break it in half. Test both bits with detector, if one bit goes quiet you may be in luck If both have a good sound then break them in halves and so on. If you don't get a large difference in sound between the four samples and no visible gold shows up on the bits, my hopes are not good. If you do this on most lumps be it Quartz Dirt or Clay it will save you more time to detect the land.

Well if yer dun wanna make an icky miss then I guess ya could leave the rocks out in the sun for a month until they dry out completely, then yer could smash em up with a Bad hammer!! Why use a good hammer ta crush up dirty rocks. Then yer could run the lot through a dry blower onto a sheet of nice clean white or other coloured paper of your choice. Green is nice and relaxing (and no water ta make a mess with) Then you could get down and dirty on yer hands and knees and pick out all the gold with a pair of tweezers.
