Beginners Luck (Amigos)
So my brother in law Steve asked if i would take him prospecting for the first time. Of course, no problems.
Fast foreward 1 month We arrive at camp and Stevos first task is to pass a competency test on using the hand held GPS. All good there, so we harness him up to a GPX5000 on factory settings and send him on his way. The words Low and Slow no doubt ringing in his ears.
I flanked him from 40 metres just to observe, and within minutes he is yelling " Listen to this". He's in a sandy creek bed and swinging over a Screamer. Well, half a dozen scrapes of the pick and he is the proud owner of a battered Vic Bitter can. He thought it was really funny and off he went. The next find was a paper clip (which was a good effort) followed 10 minutes later by the call "I've found Gold". This time he's got a cheeky grin and presents me with a discoloured 1 dollar coin.
Anyhow, about 30 minutes into his detecting career, he presents me with a rock, covered in moist red loam and exclaims " This rock is making the detector squeel". I notice it is heavy and on closer inspection, there is a tiny bit of yellow colour on a protruding portion of the rock.
I rubbed it hard on my shirt tail and then said to Steve, "You know what you've found don't you?" "No" he said "What?" "About 6 thousand bucks, that's what you've found mate !!"
Well, as you can imagine, he could'nt believe it and kept saying "Your kidding, your B-ll sh-tting me Thommo".
So, beers all round and the lie detector said 133 grams of West Australian gold.
We found another ounce of small bits and a nice 7 gram sunbaker in the 4 days.
ps We share all our gold. Thanks Stevo!! cheers Pete.
