4500 Settings
Gday guys, I recently upgraded my machine from the extreme to a 4500 and am having a little trouble getting my head around the settings... was wondering if anyone would care to shed some light and give me a few pointers and tips. Have done some research on here and found some good base settings but not to sure where to go from there. The area I spend the majority of my time is around the Castlemaine area. Have found some great little pieces with the extreme and managed to pick up some nice bits two weekends ago with the new one.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks in advance.

Re: 4500 Settings
Front end cap settings.
Search mode....G
Soil Timings....Enhance.
Ground Balance....Fixed.
Coil RX....M
Turn unit on, and hold switch down till it enters FP mode. Reset all settings.
Using a mono coil...11" or 12" or 14x9" maybe even the 14x7"...small to medium coil in other words...you chose.
Push the auto tune button and don't move the coil, or operate anything that produces a spark or transmission till its finished. Hold the detector as if you were using it, dont lay it on the ground with the coil half and half re axis while auto tuning.
Adjust audio tone to suit your preference.
Lower the threshold till its that soft you can barely hear it.
Find subtle target, and up the gain, and mess with the stabilizer till either you have trouble Ground Balancing, or it starts to get a bit to chirpy. Remember, the stabilizer works backwards...low numbers = more stabilization...high numbers = less stabilization.
If your using a booster of some sort, up the Target Volume to max and readjust your boosters volume till your happy with the level.
And remember, there is no secret settings, what works for you in that area one day, maybe useless the next day...or an hr later you maybe changing things about again due to the level of EMI.??
You can find gold in just the FP settings with very little stuffing about with all the other settings. FP is your rock to come back to when things start going pear shaped with your fiddling. Nothing wrong with having a fiddle tho...fiddling will teach you what works and whats not so hot. The FP settings along with just the tone change to suit your listening pleasure, are the closest thing your going to get to the best/secret settings.
Good luck.

Re: 4500 Settings
Good simple advice from an experienced operator, Value?...priceless especially this bit, "And remember, there is no secret settings, what works for you in that area one day, maybe useless the next day...or an hr later you maybe changing things about again due to the level of EMI.??", only experimentation in dealing with issues as they arise in the field will further your understanding of this machines capabilities but some good plain advice such as this will definitely get you on the right road, thanks and Kudos to you Narrawa.

Re (If your using a booster of some sort, up the Target Volume to max and readjust your boosters volume till your happy with the level. )
I used s booster with earlier ML machines, but just use the amp in the 45 battery with a speaker, and thought that another booster in series with the 45 battery amp would just create more noise, not a better signal.
Appreciate comments and the name of the booster.
Thanks
Peter

Re: 4500 Settings
Gday Peter
Before I started using a booster on my 4500 I used to run the Target Vol at 20. While the machine was fairly scittish, it made a huge difference to what you could hear. Now, running the booster, I have toned the TV back to about 12 and upped the booster levels and it works very smoothly and is much more sensitive (read loud on targets here) than my mates 5k.
Leaving the TV level at 20 and upping the booster level tends to make the 4500 a bit unfriendly. I'm talking west oz Murchison/East Murchison areas here.
cheers
Brett

G'day PeterInSa
Running a B&Z booster on the 4500/5000 is not "In Series" as such, it actually cuts out the booster in the Minelab battery and goes it alone. I use about 8 on the target volume on the 4500 and then adjust the booster to the desired amount.
I don't subscribe to the theory of up the target volume to full, and back of the booster, I find this is not the way to go at all, but hey what would I know.

Re: 4500 Settings
Its very simple...the target volume is your over all volume...if your not interested in letting through the information the detector is trying to relay...turn it down.
The booster has no magic happening...it simply amplifies what it hears.
The GPX range have many filters....its up to you the operator to implement them when and where their needed. You can mix and match many of the settings, but at the end of the day, you still need to hear their effects....and the best way to hear these effects, is to allow the detector to pass them onto the final stage....you.

Re: 4500 Settings
yes but by turning up the detector volume to flatout on the 4500/5000 and turning down the booster volume all you get is distorted sound IMHO, but running the detector volume at about half and using the booster volume control you don't get distorted sound but clear crisp target signals.
The volume control is not a "Filter" and all the available info is there wether the volume is up or down it's just that we humans can't hear it, if its down to low the detector still knows there is a signal there and the volume has nothing to do with the target strength.
You could use flashing lights instead of volume sound, or an electrical vibration for that matter, so again in IMHO it's better to used less volume on the detector and let the booster do what it is good at doing, and that is giving good volume control and making the target signals stand out.
As always each to there own when it comes to what works best for one may not work best for another.
I know I will be using the B&Z booster for a long time to come, and even on the 7000 it makes a hell of a big difference.
cheers dave

Dave re (7000 it makes a hell of a big difference)
I am a 7000 owner( have the 45 as a backup also my wife uses a 45, appreciate Your, Brett and Narrawa 45's comments)
I use the loudspeaker on the 7k, I take it, to use the booster you need to use the headphones and what settings (sensitivity)do you use with the booster and Headphones.
Thanks
Peter

I don't want to hijack the topic with 7000 stuff, but I plug the B&Z booster in via the WM12 module for the 7000 (the headphone socket on the WM12) and run dual external speakers from the B&Z booster. I don't use headphones at all.
cheers dave
