New member my name is Ross

Hi first time on a forum ever. I own a gpx5000 my 11 kids said mum and dad you stay home to much so I thought that when we got marry way back in 1978 we went gold detecting with a whites detector so 36 years later here we are we have been out twice no luck I have be told to get a better coil and get the right setting I may have a new coil but need help with setting if someone can help with that would be good I am going away with some of the kids later this month it would be good if we look like we are doing it right I can't wait till we find our first piece of gold I can't sleep so I have to find it soon we are thinking of going to wedderburn do you think that's a good place. I had my hands full with three.. I got married in 75..

Anyway you have a great machine to detect with.. And if you start finding tiny bits of junk and shot pellets.
You know you are doing the right thing..
Can't wait to hear of your first gold find..

What is your new coil you need help with???

Welcome to the forum Ross. A little research and persistence over any a gold bearing ground,will increase your chances of finding gold.Go over your manual several times till you get a reasonable understanding of what's what and how the 5000 performs,then practice experimenting on various targets. Always start in factory pre-set till you build up enough confidence in your machine,before proceeding to more advanced search techniques.

G'day Ross and welcome to the forum,

You have the best detector that is on the market at the present time. The standard 11" mono is as good a coil you could possibly need and you should be able to find gold with it. I personally use the 14" NFA round coil on my GPX5000 and find it a very good all round coil. I mostly run my detector in the fine gold setting with this coil and find sub gram to multi gram nuggets with out any problems shallow/deep. Usually I run my detector near to Factory Presets depending how the conditions are then I may adjust the gain and stabiliser to suit. As Kon61 has said read and get an understanding of the manual which may take quite a few times until it sinks in. Hope this helps and good luck out there. Here is a link so have a read.

Thank you so much I am not good with computers. Trying to get the right setting will take time but with all the information I got of the link is so good. At lest I now have a good start . Me and my carer are going out tomorrow I hope to find the first big one ross

Good luck for tomorrow Ross and remember Go Low and Slow. Try to keep your coil close to the ground and move very slow while swinging your coil very slowly. Dig any slight change in the threshold that you hear and enjoy you time out there. Hope to hear of your finds when you get back.

Seeing you have got 11 KIDS the first I would suggest is stick with the 11" coil (or smaller) till you get to really know your machine.

Anybody else out there know??

Hi every one still no luck but I got a new coil a nugget finder adv17x11 spoked mono, I hope I have better luck but once again I have to ask for your help. I need to know some settings to try I am going up to Maryborough in a weeks time, I was also hoping to meet up with wombat I have try to contact him with no success, so if you see this wombat can you try and contact me.i have been reading a lot what the forum has to say, a lot of smart people and very good knowledge thank you.
