Hi;

On OziExplorer,
Munburra Farm comes up as 14 54.003 S 144 59.998 E.
In the Munburra Reserve there is an abandoned mine “Antimony Creek” close to the Starcke River.
The mine coordinates are 14 53.548 S 145 01.911 E.
I don’t have any information regarding gold in this area.

Regards
Scrat

Good day All.
Any of you southeners planning to go up the top end be very CROCs they move around alot in the wet & pop up along way from salt water. the rule of thumb is if there is water there is likely crocs. even in dams hundreds of km. from the sea.
Cheers Greg

Here's a good link to the Starcke Gold field north of Cooktown, scroll down to the Cape Melville section http://www.dme.qld.gov.au/zone_files/geoscience_pdf/farnorth_cairnsetc.pdf.

I knew a guy who was prospecting up there years ago, he did pretty well but was using a motor bike to access then a massive foot hike over a rugged mountain range to get into the alluvial gullies. He mentioned the area held some of the biggest and most aggressive Taipans he has ever seen (Old Palmer River prospector so knows a thing or two about snakes) and also told me a horror story of being woken up late one night in his camp by a guy with and shotgun and his mate using a cross bow.

The areas is best visited in June through to October once the rivers dry up after the wet and is from what I can gather is now mostly National park.

Hope this helps,

Taipans are real nasty, even in winter they will go out of their way to take a swipe at you, hence the warning. You get hit with one of them up in that country it would be best to do what the movie says..... "stick your head between your knees and kiss your arse good bye" affraid Lucky thing is though you don't see them in numbers so I would say they have large territories (rodent hunters) so don't tend to bunch up and tend to be nocturnal when on the hunt.

I know another bloke who went in there a few years back and scored a couple of ounces off the old heaps but had to do massive amounts of walking to get onto the areas (no vehicle access even by quad), one spot produced an ounce in an hour or so but he had to skedaddle back out before darkness fell. The guy I knew back in the '90's got one piece around 8 ounces from memory so decent gold can be had from the area. I also have a brother in-law who is a professional crabber in the area if you wanted a contact for some local info, PM me if you like for his details. I also have some quality kevlar snake gators coming in from the US (designed for rattle snake strike) if your interested.

Gaiters are a good idea, I detect gullies and creeks in my area, overgrown snakey places. About an hour up steep hills to the car, then another hour to civilization, can't afford to take chances, one bite under these conditions and you're in deep trouble. Snakeproof gaiters are a cheap insurance policy.

I still haven't come across my first snake for the season, I'm getting off lightly compared to last year. I can hardly wait.

Regards Bill.
