Southern NSW Gold Sites

Hello Everyone. I just want to add my 2 dollars worth here as to be honest im getting frustrated with people saying that there is no gold or Nuggets down this way, and that you need to head west to get into the bigger nuggets. I live in jindabyne and basically work gold from batemans bay south and back to vic border towards Kanchoban, so this is the area ill be mostly talking about. A few places in the ACT as well. Firstly ill say i have taken nuggets up to 5 and 6 grams regularly from all the places I mention and even a few oz plus from a select few places.

Mogo For starters, East of the highway( towards the coast ) not west is my killer ground at the moment. Ive been getting gold in the state forest and Private land back up to surf beach outer suburbs. ( around mogo zoo kinda area) the vegetation can be quite thick in places but i normally start off looking for changes in the dirt road colour. The roads are cut through quartz occasionally and the red becomes more white and gray. Once i find the quartz in the road i head out at that spot. Mogo has alot of parallel quartz runs that run north to south and the dirt roads litterally cut through them and change colour from the graders. i work walk these places and normally find an old digging buried under the bush. detecting around them is difficult but always productive. I use this same technique west of the highway in the more popular sites and never do as well. Mainly cause i think they have been worked to death. Alot of people think that towards the coast the gold runs out but ive found nuggets to 3 grams all the way to the beach in more deserted areas like potato point.
I have found nuggets from south of the bay all the way to the vic border. Another great spot is dry creek just north of bega. Especially now as it is dry. No pun intended. look for the little falls in the creek and work around the tops and bottoms of them. the gold here is normally smaller but ive found alot here. Oh i should mention that all the gold was found either sluiceing or detecting. growing up in canberra i often visit back to wallaroo rd just north of canberra and west of hall. Its private property but ive never had trouble getting around. Just take wallaroo rd all the way to the end and work down towards the river. Ive pulled a 2.2 ouncer out of there and many nice nuggets. Also worth a look is along the old gundaroo rd, North side about 7 km along up into the hills. Again private but just ask nicely. Id say areas of that are bendigo equivalent.
Id be more than happy to give further info on southern NSW as working for myself i get out 4 or 5 times a week and have tried many "dead Zones" to end up very surprised.
Nimmitabel, Araluen, Braidwood All have good places to go. the best way to describe my location here would be to say get to town centre and work towards cooma. that direction and side of town.
Bomballa and delegate have top places to and have found many nice nuggets as well.

I usually go outside of the normal places looking for gold, and while it may not be as rich as other major hot spots , I find it doesnt get flogged at all or most places not even touched so it seems to work in my favour.
Not to mention all the coins , jewellery and "old Stuff" i have found as well. My best score of these was a 1930 penny. just had it valued for more than all the gold ive ever found. It was found in the foundations of an old miners camp just north of berridale. Hope this helps some southerners to not give up down here as not only is it a beautiful part of australia loaded with gold, the rivers have given up many garnets sapphires and and other precious rocks. Wow you talk about finding some nice gold and
A 1930 penny they are very rare
There was a lot of fake ones
As there weren't many made
Some photos would be great in member finds
I bet you have some other stories of your area also

Wow. That is the eighth 1930 Penny I have heard of being found in the Snowies.

I found a 1923 Half Penny last year but that was in vic .

Have you got any maps that are worth posting up

Hard to locate just where, but in some old maps, there show a lot of old gold locations all over the east coast of NSW.

thats good to hear. Im a wimp with cold weather and wont go far from the coast in winter. I'll go for a fool around down the south coast. thanks for the tips.

Sounds good I have just moved to bega moved from Shepparton via Melbourne never had much of an opportunity before , my plan and dream is to buy a detector , since moving here I have been thinking there's got to be gold in them hill's and reading your post makes me feel like its time I invest in one , soon anyhow , I don't know anything about detector's but will learn along the way , Thanks Ross :

I am in the Bay and have access to some private land in the areas you descibe so I might have to get out there and have a look...I generally head out past Mogo on the western side of the highway...

I sure would be interested in meeting up with you. I am also a Jindabyne resident with a farm up near Lake Crackenback and close to old diggings. I've been oversees gold mining in Laos for 10 years and just come home. Although I'm a geologist, detecting is a new hobby. In Laos I did lots of panning with artisan miners. I know the science but not the practicality. I hope to hear from you.

While Im very much a newbie to all things gold fossicking I was discouraged to read in other forums that Mogo and surrounds was supposed to be stripped bare, especially for panning. I went out just for the heck of it early in january since I was in the area and can report that all three places I 'tried a pan' I got a bit of colour.

Being very much a newbie, I probably lost a lot more gold than i bottled. While it definitely wasn't worth the afternoon invested for the few spots I took home I enjoyed myself. I also confirmed most of what I had read about where gold is likely to collect was true.

For whatever its worth all three places were in the inland side from the highway and less than 20 minute easy walks, although the easy part was helped a lot by an experienced young digger (my son) breaking trail for his old man (me) and mom to experience a bit of his job. Important lesson .... soldiers are useful getting round in the scrub, wife was best left at the car.

Hi mate, I am interested in those places you mentioned. I am wondering if I can meet you up there. I have many years's experience of extracting and purifying gold. I am thinking if we can get gold from the river or even from rocks from the upstream. Anyway, I am glad to hear from you and have a discussion.
