177 oz nugget Ballarat area
Something smells a bit here, if this nugget was found on Wednesday morning, there is no way anyone would announce the find until the finder had totally gone over the ground where he found it to make sure there wasn't anything else there. Also he would have left it weeks before announcing it to get people off his trail where he had been prospecting. they said on the news this morning he was a newby and paid $6500 for his minelab detector? that's a bit steep for a 5000?? I wouldn't be surprised if this nugget was found many moons ago and now made public?
A hell of a find i grant you and the very best of luck to the finder. But something just doesn't sound right here.

Simply...Fantastic, life changing, and the very best of luck to the owner. lets face it 100% of us would want to be him. But it still doesn't sound right...... he is either as streetwise as a Flip Flop or is cunning and found this many moons ago and elsewhere We will never know!

Re: 177 oz nugget Ballarat area
come seriously now if you found a 177 ouncer nugget are you ganna be running around tell people where you found it, nah i dont think so, you'd hold onto it for a little while, and you'd absolutly smash that area ya found it for the next couple of week or so.. so you'd know for sure there's not a older brother sitting out there waiting..

Yeah a lot of misinformation it this report in my opinion but what the heck it's their story and they are sticking to it but who thinks that nugget is water worn?

Very very water worn. I would love to see just how big that nugget was when it was originally shed from the reef. Great find and good luck to the bloke who found it. I heard he was a new chum and his missus didn't take to kindly to laying out all that money for a detector. Bet she is happier now.

Ark,
How else would you imagine they would get the water worn appearance on a lump of gold like that?
I am a little curious as to the removal of the material from the little indentations.
Best regards to the happy prospector, but I would have given quids to see the look on his wife’s face when he showed it to her.

Is this nugget eluvial or alluvial ? I think it has never seen a creek or river as it looks like a couple of indicator nuggets I have seen in my hands also as you said those pockets are are an indication that this nugget is eluvial in nature.

No matter what the story is behind it. It still came out of the ground and if it was many moons ago, at least we can say there was big gold there.
Re: 177 oz nugget Ballarat area
The finder would be loving all the attention the nugget is getting
Equally the seller could never buy all this free publicity, win, win .......... It's amazing what one rock from out of the ground can do!

Re: 177 oz nugget Ballarat area
And someone told me there were no sceptics on this forum . And if it has never seen a creek or river how did it get so smooth? I'll take the story on its merits as it doesn't matter to me if it was alluvial or eluvial why does that make a difference you didn't find it and neither did I. Just wish the man good luck and be happy for him.
