Nugget finder 24" Elipt Mono

Just wondering whats others thoughts of the above coil are and what their smallest nugget or targets found with this coil.
I have owned this coil for about a year and have hardly used it, but tried it yesterday on an area I have been finding small nuggets between 0.2 to 1.5 gms.
I haven't been able to find any more targets with the 12 elipt mono and thought I would see if anything bigger was deeper down there.
I didn't find any gold but found two small air gun pellets .177 and a small metal staple all down about 3".
Also several small doser chips about 0.2 which boomed in on the surface where the blade ran across hard rocks
I wouldn't have thought this possible with such a large coil.
My unit still is a modded 3500 and the settings were sensitive, deep with the large gold timing.

dont think you will get any more depth out of a modded 3500 only sensivety witch a small coil whould have done

I just was expecting the 24" coil to detect larger deeper targets that the 12" might have missed but didn't expect it to be able to detect such small targets easily, the airgun pellets at depth are hard to detect at the best of times due to being hollow.
I know the ends of the elipt coils are more sensitive but still could hear the signals well from the sides.
I'm not really trying to give any example re the detecor just the proportion of sensitivity between the 12 " and 24" coils to which in my way of thinking didn't add up.
I did dig as expected larger deeper targets but shouldn't have been able to get such small targets , I would have thought the small target advantage from the 12" would have been much greater or should I say the 24" to perform much less in this area.

You've probably heard that, elliptical coils are only as good as their width in depth and a lot less sensitive than their equivalent round brothers in width.This is what i have found out by testing various Advantage coils on the GPX4500,on actual mineralized gold ground conditions,with both natural undug inground targets,and various lead ball sized targets,and found that,The 24x12 Nugget Finder Coil,has the equivalent depth of the 18"round,as targets get larger than a 5 cent coin in surface area size.Has the sensitivity of a 14"round along its front and rear edges,and being elliptical in shape,runs more quieter than the 18" round and has a much more defined or should i say,sharper signal response to small and medium sized targets,[surface and depth wise],and a hell of a lot better,pinpointing capabilities,compared to a large round. Basically,to sum it all up,the 24 x12" Nugget Finder,is not only good for maneuvering through thick scrub and ground coverage,but for picking up nuggets [0.3gm close to the surface]and 10 grammers or above at exceptional depths.

hi mark if the ground is deep try running in normal and deep instead of sensitive ,deep you may be surprised
on bigger deep targets
this works on standard machines not sure about modded ones

hi MS, yes you have a bloody good coil in that 24inch eliptical, glad to see you are haveing a lot of success with it and your 3500.

i ran with a 24 inch coilteck elipt mono with my gpextreme for some years, had a lot of success and plenty of surface minnoes plus the prized bigger ones deeper down, up to 109grams at 24 inches.


i would have to totally agree with what CON61 says. i now run with a 4500 and my best coil for all ground is a 17 inch nf elipt mono. best with this setup so far is a 28gram nug at 21 inches. i reckon it goes just as deep as my 16 inch round nf mono, but the sensitivity at the tips makes the elipt coil much more versatile. i will stick with that combo .... kev

Thanks for the replys , there are advantages with the larger elipt coils and I see a lot using the 17" on the 4000 and the 4500 , I guess you can cover more bases that way on small and large gold, whilst the 24 is a big coil it still is sensitive enough for general use.
Mine is the open spoke type and sticks do get caught up in it time to time but not often enough to cause much of a problem.
The advantage of covering more ground in a day is handy but I have noticed a increase in elect interferiance especially when an aircraft comes over head or if someone is detecting close by .

Myself and the wife both have 4500's and we both have 17" NF Elip Mono's...........to be honest I think they are a good thing, but having gone back to using the same coil in 14" has proved to be a lot quieter and easier to swing for long periods.....it also forces me to slow down a bit and be a bit more systematic with my swinging.
I would definitely use the 17" more in open ground, but I think the 14" is a better General Purpose Mono coil.
I am however going to pick up a couple of 24" versions as well soon as I get around to it, and see how they go in those big open grassless goldfields.

The only reason I try to avoid the 11" round to 17" Elipt range of coils is I know I'm not the first person to detect over the ground I work, and know most people use coils in that range, sticking to smaller or larger coils brings targets up into range that others have missed and in my opinion is creating an advantage, Its also interesting to watch others work an area and whilst they usually target the best easiest spots , I tend to work the harder ground.
I would class the 12" Nugget finder Advantage coil to be more sensitive than the 11" round mono and tried the coiltek Joyey but found that to slow to cover the ground but does have a use around rocks and poking into thick cover.
One spot I have ,I got too smart for myself and totally left the best spot alone as I was sure a hell dozens would have covered it years ago,
two trips ago I thought what the heck and had a swing over it on the way out and found 5 bits of gold in less than 10 Min.

have just used the 24" nuggetfinder with a 4500 and picked up a small 0.25gm nugget. was very impressed that a big coil like this could pickup such a small nugget. it was under some rocks and in about 1" of loose soil.

I have never had a detector but recently bought my first one a 4500 first time out at Georgetown 6 nuggets with a 17 inch nf elipcal mono also went over exact same track just to test with 24 inch nf mono same settings bingo another 2 nuggets.Nugget size was actually smaller 1 grammers and found deeper with the 24 inch than the 17 inch so figure that out both bloody good coils. Still would like to try a Coiltek 18 round against a 24 elipcal.

was the 24 inch coil a white model or a grey advantage coil>>>?????

Last week I bought 3 coils for the next season in Queensland starting next month I hope [Stop raining]
8inch Commander Mono I see Stoppse has great results on his youtube Vidios finding the smalles nuggets.
17inch *11inch Mono Coiltek I have read good results with this coil
24inch *14inch Mono Coiltek I have heard the wider 14inch makes a difference

I first saw this coil last Summer when a mate from Queensland who had it welded to his detector using it as his standard coil I liked the look for a big coil,and it balanced well on a 4500..(or any other control box) I was immediately smitten

I was torn between getting a 17x11NF,but having a 12inch NF round that covered that range for depth,but not ground coverage so it had to be a 24x12NF...Now this is a serious coil as in the amount of real estate one covers with each swing,but it can be a bit awkward as Kon61 has said also..But once you can adapt your swing and pace,it works nicely..The first day i swung it i pushed it too hard...thought i was using my 12inchNF so i ended up with a sore shoulder....but all`s good now..

Well 3rd time out with it on Monday and i was adapting well to its different responses to target signals...i was finding small shot and they were quite easy to pinpoint..The coil can groan a bit more with ground noises,but bigger coils do receive a lot more feedback from the ground and EMI also.....Well i was saying 3rd time out and it was nearing the end of a long swinging day...with no gold.

I detected a nice lead shot / bullet like signal,scraped away the leaf litter and the signal rose...Mmm promising i thought,so once i got 3 inches down into hard gravels the signal was beautiful and i was VERY confident of this being gold...after digging down about 10 inches the target was out....and in my scoop there was a lovely nugget which weighed in at 9.5 grams

I am very happy with this coil and it fits nicely into my coil lineup...I am looking forward to finding something deeper with this coil....and besides deep junk....deep gold too

Well as i said that after using this coil for a month that i liked it,and if you like elliptical big coils then it works well...I have just traded mine back on a 17x11 NF and as an everyday use coil it suits my needs better at this stage,and maybe the 24x12 NF will fulfil my big coil needs further down the track...or then again an 18 inch round NF just could be better for me Ahh would be nice to have each and all coils in ones line up.

PS..Update 26/12/11 Thinking back on using this coil,i think i would still like to have one in the kit.I am quite happy with using the 17"x11" NF as my standard search coil and with good results.Now i needed a coil to get more depth like the bigger elliptical that i had,so have settled on a 16" NF round.I find this coil gives me that confidence that i am getting that extra depth,and for me it is more manageable than the big elliptical.
